Given to me yesterday by friend who doesn’t want it. It’s dusty but not sure I should shower it until I know what it is. I’ve googled various descriptions but can’t find a match. TIA.

Can anyone identify this houseplant please?

The foliage looks similar to a plant I have - Vriesea Astrid but without the flowers

Looks like a Tillandsia Curly, but I can't see the base of it.

Imissingrid · 02/07/2023 16:16

There is no stem, it’s roots don’t seem to be down into the soil, as if she’s put soil in the pot and plonked the poor plant on top 🙁

Thanks for the names , I’ll Google both.

If its dusty it can't do it any harm giving it a tepid water shower.

Looking at a Google images I think it’s Vriesea Astrid @BoBoHill
I’ll shower the dust off and repot the poor thing. Bonus that it might flower one day.

I didn't know what it was, but just wanted to say how nice it is. It looks like curled ribbons.

A Tillandsia curly is an airplant, so no roots. It doesn't need earth so the pot/earth is for "display" and the thing would just be sitting on top. They absorb water and nutrients through their leaves so they don't have roots.

There’s a brilliant free app called Pl@ntnet which is great for identifying plants using your phone camera.

@Imissingrid thanks for picture. I’ve ju ordered one 😁

@TwitTwoodiniEscapeOwlogist i did not know that! Explains why it was sitting on a mound of very soggy soil. I’ll see how it goes on.
@Imnotswallowingthat thanks for the App. I’ll download it, second unwanted plant friend has palmed off on me given me so there could be more to come.
