Prescription varifocal glasses - budget friendly

Where do you get your prescription glasses from that don’t cost a lot please? Prefer not online as this is for varifocals.

I had to get varifocals for the first time 3-4 years ago and the first pair cost about £400 from Boots, the next two prescription changes cost around £120 (2 pairs) from Asda. My prescription is changing every year for 3 years so it’s getting expensive.

I only had my eyes test exactly a year ago and I’ve been feeling for a month now that my prescription has changed yet again (the long-sighted part) as my eyes are straining etc, and I was correct when this happened last time.

I found Asda’s range very limited (for narrow frames which I need/small face) so I wondered if anyone else has found another opticians that is purse-friendly? Specsavers aren’t much cheaper than Boots for varifocals (was quoted £285).

It’s the varifocals lens that costs the most as the cheaper varifocals lenses have a smaller reading area, it really is best to choose the best lense you can afford otherwise you are left with varifocals you struggle to read in.
Have you looked at teenager frames if you need a more petit frame? Asda do seem to be quite good value for lenses compared to boots / vision express.

@TwoFourSixEightNeverTooLate I’ve looked at kids frames but I don’t recall seeing teenagers so I will ask, thanks. Varifocals can be so expensive but I’ve never had an issue with Asda’s version, it’s just their choice of frames (can’t say I’m impressed with the staff either unfortunately compared to other opticians).

Surprised at Asda I find their petite selection much better than anywhere else! Staff at my nearest one are lovely too, annoying yours isn't the same.

Even replacement lenses only cost over £200 via lenses direct for my vari a few years ago.

I have very sophisticated graduation of visual fields in my varifocal lenses and they are way more than the highest price you paid. I think the cheap ones would have an obvious demarcation between long, short and intermediate sight fields but would be interested to hear of anywhere that does good lenses at a reasonable price.

I agree with PP that with varifocals get the best you can afford. The Hoya lenses are fantastic but the cheaper Nova Plus ones aren't bad. I had a few pairs made up and they were significantly cheaper than anywhere else and very helpful with communications over the phone and email (I don't work for them!).

I use glasses direct for my variofocals

@Maddy70 have you found it easy enough to accurately do all the measurements yourself etc? This is what concerns me and if an online retailer will change the lenses if they are not right.

Asda are the cheapest out of the high street stores for varifocals as they do not charge for the lenses.

dobt do vatigocala on line. The tolerance for getting the bits I. The right place and the glasses being good or awful is very tight and shops can measure and if needs be adjust / change

I got varifocal sunglasses from glasses direct. As they were "only" sunglasses I thought I'd take the chance. I went for their cheapest varifocal lenses. They're not quite as good as the top of the range ones from the optician, but they're fine. I'm seriously considering going for their next ones up next time I need glasses.

Varifocals damn autocorrect

I had a pair of varifocals reglazed to my new prescription.
I used lensology.com and asked for the same make of lenses as original glasses (Essilor) and they had the old glasses to copy the alignment from. They were perfect, got another year out of them until the frame broke!

We are fortunate to have a place locally that specialises in ‘…wholesale spectacle makers and retailer’. They are really cheap far, far cheaper than Boots and Specsavers and I also have varifocals.

Costco did my new ones so much better than spec savers & they weren't that expensive considering the quality of the Zeiss lenses which mean I can actually drive at night now
