I just can't have a lie in anymore.

I wake up at 6am. Every bloody morning.

It's Saturday, I have nothing to do for hours. My kids are all teens and won't be up till I wake them. DH would sleep till 1pm if I let him

I want to be asleep 😂

I have dogs and it means one of us is always up early so both of us are awake. We have a toddler too and this morning I managed to feed them and let them out without him waking which felt like such an achievement yet I’ve still been awake since 6 🙄

Haha I read that as letting the toddler out! 😂 I need to go back to bed…

escapingthecity · 01/07/2023 07:34

Can you reframe it to think of your own special time with the house to yourself and no one else up? Do some yoga? Make a cup of tea and watch a programme only you like?

sm40 · 01/07/2023 07:37

Why do you wake the pup up? Wait for them to wake you?
Also share pup duty with Dh?
I'm on dog duty this morning (got up at 7 when she whined).
Dh will be on duty tomorrow.
But yes in general my ninja lie in skills are fading.
However have my cuppa and Mumsnet to keep me company. Bliss.

WalterWitty · 01/07/2023 07:38

Same for me and same age, maybe is it a thing then? It’s so annoying!! I went to sleep at 2am last night and woke up at 6. I think it’s the day light that wakes me up and we just need better blinds 🤣

Have a toddler who gave up naps a year ago so now I don’t even get a weekend afternoon snooze

Squaffle · 01/07/2023 07:46

Same here, it’s been years since I slept in… today even more infuriating as I’m away for the weekend with my girlfriends so no DCs to wake us up, and I have been awake since 6:30!

Because I'm awake and I'd rather take her out then wait for her to have an accident. She goes straight back to sleep.

If I didn't I'd just be lay there anyways thinking 'is she going to wee in her crate?' so it makes sense yo just go.

It's my pup so he doenst get up with her no, but even if he did just him getting out of bed would wake me up.

If a kid flushes the loo I'm awake. Or I just randomly wake.

Oh I hear you OP. I’m lucky to get past 5am at the moment. Driving me crackers. I decided the other day I’m just going to start using the time wisely and get up and do stuff.

Sometimes I look at my snoring husband and I have to resist hitting him with a pillow in a jealous rage.

ARareKindaBear · 01/07/2023 07:59

I was up at 5am this morning. I’ve not been able to lie in for years 😞 on the plus side the dog gets a nice early walk before the idiots come out

Whyjustwhy123 · 01/07/2023 08:06

@ARareKindaBear Yep ddog gets nice long walks in the morning. This time of year it’s great.

Im also trying to use the time to just do some reading.

PonkyPonky · 01/07/2023 08:06

I think it’s circadian rhythm related. In the winter I am capable of sleeping until 7-8 but summer it’s always 5:30-6. I sleep with an eye mask on so it’s not literally light waking me up but it’s like my body somehow knows it is light out and therefore I should be awake. It’s exhausting

I do this. I absolutely relish the silent solitude of early mornings, those 2 or 3 hours of me time.

I am considerate (lazy) so do not wake the others by pootling about doing housework. That waits for us all to share. I read, I play computer games, I chat with like minded friends on social media and, on mornings like this, I am sitting with my feet up on the edge of our raised pond, dog at my feet, mug of tea, hot buttery toast, enjoying the twittering of the sparrows in the dappled sunshine.

Bliss.

BarrelOfOtters · 01/07/2023 08:09

Yes, if it’s nice I’ll go and do a bit of dressing gown gardening. Today it’s not so I did duolingo and tried to go back to sleep. Shutting cat in kitchen has helped….

Kiwiandstrawberries · 01/07/2023 08:11

I always wake up about 6ish ,mess about on iPad and then doze off again and get up 9-930 if I am not working!

Bubbles254 · 01/07/2023 07:18

It is normally 4 something or if I am lucky 5 something for me.

What I would like to know with the perimenopause is whether if gets better once you come out the other side or if early morning wakings are permanent now.

Late 60s, retired 3 years, still wake up at 5,6 or 7 if I'm very lucky!

Tired by late afternoon.

Sworntofun · 01/07/2023 08:28

Yep I’m another one, it doesn’t matter how late I go to bed- say after a night out - I’m always awake by 6. Often this can be 5am or even earlier. It’s infuriating! Going to a big birthday party/ mini festival today and not sure I have the energy. And sorry to those who think it will get better after the menopause. I’m later 50s post menopause and it’s no better. Sorry 😞

I remember those days :( Can you put something on the TV downstairs and try and doze?

Ones 14 months and the other is 3, they want to play IMMEDIATELY after waking up. I know it will get easier...I just have to wait out the next however many years!

applepearplum · 01/07/2023 10:41

Just out of curiosity, how long do you lie in bed before giving up?

I'm up early every day but not by choice, I have a toddler. I think I could will myself back to sleep if I had the chance!

I lay there until I can convince my husband to get out of bed. Just mess about on my phone. Sometimes I'll get up and do stuff.

This morning I paid DS £2 to take the puppy downstairs. I put my sleep mask on and just as I was nodding off the bloody cat came in and jumped on my head 😭😂

I cant ever go back to sleep, my body wills me out of bed. I think it must be a 40s thing.

Binbonboomf · 01/07/2023 07:01

I have to point out the pup doesn't wake me up. I wake her up. Then she goes right back to sleep 😐

Yes, some times I was at 5am. Never later than 6.45

The whole house is snoring and I'm actually feeling really tired but I just won't be able to go back to sleep.

It's so bloody annoying.

Why are you waking her up? My pup has slept from 10-7.30 without needing a wee since about 10 weeks old.

Longwhiskers · 01/07/2023 18:35

I’ve never been able to lie in :( I remember at Uni beinf away at 7 and being so bored, knowing my flat mates wouldn’t be up till noon! With two youngish children now sleeping past 7am feels like a lie in. Very occasionally like in the easter holidays I can get into a pattern of forcing myself back to sleep and grabbing another 30-60 mins if I have woken early at 6am ish. I always look in amazement at some of my relatives who can snooze in till 11.

ThreeRingCircus · 01/07/2023 19:31

I can't have a lie in either. Once I'm awake, that's it.

I tend to just view it as "me time" so I go downstairs, make a cup of coffee and watch one of my TV programmes that nobody else likes. Or occasionally I put a podcast on and lie on the sofa under a blanket just chilling out. Or take a cup of tea back to bed and read my book.

I try to remind myself that although I may not be asleep I'm still relaxing and resting.

haha well that’s tomorrow’s plan.. what’s the worst that could happen? 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

LyndaSnellsSniff · 01/07/2023 21:36

I usually wake at about 5/5.30 needing a wee. I then have to decide whether to go for a wee and risk falling back into a deep sleep, have weird-ass dreams and then feel hungover all morning OR not go to the toilet, and lie awake being annoyed that my stupid peri-meno body is falling apart.
