Today I gave up vaping, anyone want to join me?

I stopped smoking 16 years ago, but in a stressful situation ten years ago I started vaping, in order to avoid smoking.

I'm now ready to give up again. My partner doesn't smoke or vape, none of my friends do and I just want to be free of it now.

I know it won't be easy. Today I've not known what to do with my hands. I keep getting ready to reach for my vape, then remember that I can't. I've put all my vape stuff in a box in the shed. I should probably throw it away tbh.

I've bought some nicotine lozenges because I hope just the thought of getting some nicotine from them will help at the beginning, but I'm not planning on taking them for long. I know I just need to break the habit and that can take three weeks or so.

Anyone want to join me, either stopping vaping or smoking? I'd welcome the support 😊

Not really joining as I quit about 18m ago but there's a necklace, I think called a breathless or something similar, which essentially is a little metal stick you breathe through to replace the vape cigarette. Might help with giving you something to do with your hands. Well done on your decision to quit its not easy but worth it!

As an aside consciously put the money you'd spend on vape in a jar and treat yourself as a reward. Inwosh I'd done this as I genuinely don't know how I afforded to smoke/vape and the money I used to buy them just got swallowed up in general household money!

Thank you for your reply. I'll look for that, I've not heard of it before. I also hadnt thought about putting the money I'm saying to one side, so I'll do that too 😊

Just wanted to say well done and keep going. I’ve seen people who are addicted to vaping and do truly think quitting is hard but best.

good luck!

Thank you. It is very addictive and whilst I was pleased I wasn't smoking, I still wanted to give up vaping. It wasn't as expensive as smoking, but it's still wasted money. Also my teeth are becoming discoloured and I suspect the nicotine isn't helping. I'll cut back on coffee too, because I drink far too much of it.

It's only been one day though, but I'm feeling ok most of the time.

For what it's worth OP. I found vaping a lot easier to give up than smoking. As you say, it's just the habit and finding something to do with your hands.

The longer you go without it the easier it is. Just take it one day at a time.

justlass · 30/06/2023 22:10

Thanks 😊 yes I'm hoping because I gave up smoking I'll manage this too. It can't be worse! I'm just surprised how often I'll look for my vape and then realise, no, it's not here and you're not going to, but just been putting a nicotine lozenge in my mouth when it's difficult and drinking lots of water.

I'm feeling ok this morning. I miss it a bit, but am sucking my first lozenge of the day and coping. Really want to crack this now.

I'm struggling today, maybe because I was out late last night and am very tired and a bit emotional, but I'm really missing vaping. I haven't given in, but I've found myself eating instead, just for something to do, if I carry on doing that I'll be piling weight on and I'm already at least a stone overweight.

Would nicotine patches in ever decreasing doses help? They don't offer anything to do with your hands, but will give out a fairly even dose of nicotine.

Maybe something else to do with your hands, like knitting or sewing, or a stress ball to squeeze etc.

Good luck. I gave up vaping a few years ago, gradually reducing the nicotine content to zero.

Funnily enough I was still vaping the zero-nicotine stuff for months before I finally decided it's all ridiculous and dumped the habit.

A few pangs for a while but it was much easier than giving up smoking.

ASGIRC · 03/07/2023 01:54

I am in the process of quitting smoking.
Have a zero nicotine vape handy, just for the big cravings (which for me are more about the action than about the nicotine).
I ahve had 1 actual cig both days, butt hats a big improvement on the almost 10 I used to smoke daily.
Hopefully Ill make it work

Good luck to you!

I'm not sure if the patches would help, I think it's more about doing something in the moment the craving is there, I've got lozenges I'm sucking when I want to vape, hoping that will help.

I can't knit as my kitten would attack it! I just keep cleaning when the cravings hit! The house has never been so clean! 😂

Firstly great work on getting to the stage of quitting, how are you finding the lozenges? Are they having a similar effect to vaping and fixing that itch?

Jadeee123 · 06/12/2023 08:17

Hi everyone hope this post is still here. I’m wanting to quit vaping tomorrow. Any ideas for cravings ect? I go through a elf bar a day but finding myself very out of breath even walking up
the stairs ! My cravings are worse when I have a drink also!

LemonySippet · 06/12/2023 08:26

Hi Jade, I quit just over a year ago, the first 3 days I was really fidgety and angry and didn't know what to do with myself but honestly I haven't looked back. I put the money I saved aside and bought myself treats which was nice and I feel so proud now. I didn't use any substitutes. Good luck!
