Can you tell if someone has a read receipt on an email they have sent you?

On Outlook, yes. It will say as you open it, 'X has read receipts on - would you like to send one' or similar.

I think you have to actively send a read receipt, I don't think they are automatic on any email system.

Ooh OK great! It's between Hotmail and Gmail so hopefully that's true.

You definitely would know on outlook. I'm not sure about Hotmail and the like, but I'd imagine it's the same.

I'm with BT email and a box pops up saying the sender has requested a receipt would you like to send it now? With yes and later boxes to tick

Depends on what you're using to read you're email - for example in outlook there's a setting to ask about read receipts, or to send them automatically. My old work had it on to send automatically as a default which is how I learnt this.
