So many sneery snide posters

I feel as though every other post nowadays eventually attracts replies that are terribly scornful and sneery. The most innocuous of threads asking a simple question about something trivial all the way through to very serious posts where the OP could really do with support rather than derision are attracting replies from people who just want to make sure that someone feels as small as possible. Or if a poster replies with advice it will be torn down by someone who experiences things differently.

Obviously, I'm expecting lots of mocking responses to this because it'll be just too tempting, but I've decided to air my thoughts regardless 😁

I’ve just come back to MN after a break and I have been pretty surprised. I know it’s never been all sunshine and roses here but lots seem to have lost any filter or ability look at other view points they once had. I know people will come along with yawns etc in a minute but I agree OP.

I heard Jon Ronson say recently that people have retreated to the edge of their beliefs, and I feel that is very true and the internet really amplifies that.

YANBU

I find lots of posters seem to default to "combat mode" as an opening gambit. It's not pleasant. The world has lost the ability to disagree articulately.

yanbu !

saw a thread the other day with a lady posting a dress she liked and got compliments on (it was lovely!) and way too many people were all; I don’t like it / horrible fabric / are you sure they were being honest (seriously!!!)

no one is making them reply - if they don’t like it why not scroll on!!!!

DustyLee123 · 30/06/2023 14:56

Why can’t your opinion or experience be left at just that, why does it have to be quoted and picked apart by someone with a bee in their bonnet who thinks they know better ?
Just let it be 😊

BreviloquentBastard · 30/06/2023 14:58

I think I mostly just feel sorry for them. Imagine how boring and miserable your life would have to be to take pleasure in deliberately picking people apart, sneering at them, and putting them down? I think they must be terribly unhappy people.

Backstreets · 30/06/2023 14:59

I dunno, there seems to be some lunatic with a chip on their shoulder in every thread but I feel like they’re shouted down pretty effectively by the majority.

It’s easier to keep track of the ghastly personalities on forums with avatar pictures - suspect there are a just few characters who like spreading misery!

Fallenangelofthenorth · 30/06/2023 15:00

@Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius I know which thread you mean and I thought exactly the same. Was there really any need to sneer about the fabric quality when clearly the OP felt really good about how she looked in the dress. Some people are just nasty and I suspect they're the same in real life.

You’re not wrong. They remind me of the girls in Enid Blyton school books sneering at everyone and acting superior. They are like Alicia (who was a massive bitch, let’s be honest) who was always “taking someone down a peg or two.”
