Smashing glass

Why does some glass smash into a hundred tiny peices and others into sharp shards? How can I know which is which when I purchase.

Yours,

A very clumsy person.

Tempered glass breaks into thousands of very small pieces, normal glass breaks into big shards. It's a safety/strength thing, tempered glass must be used for some applications where big, sharp shards could be lethally dangerous (e.g. glass table tops, car windows).

From one clumsy person to another, if you mean you keep smashing drinking glasses, perhaps you should try some polycarbonate ones instead.

We got these and although I wouldn't offer them to guests at a dinner party, they are fine for us to use everyday and I have dropped them on the kitchen floor numerous times and they just bounce.
