Best way of dealing with a tummy bug? TMI warning

Badbudgeter · 30/06/2023 10:36

Came down with awful tummy bug yesterday morning. My inards have emptied and apparently I weigh 4 kilos less than yesterday. I had a slice of toast yesterday at ten in attempt to settle my stomach which was a bad idea. Since then just sips of water. All that’s coming out now is small amounts of burning yellow liquid (stomach acid?)

When should I start eating again and what should I eat? Genuinely feel awful aching joints and very fatigued but no temp or vomiting.

Eat soft foods - jelly, rice pudding, scrabbled eggs, bread and butter.

ShowOfHands · 30/06/2023 10:42

Eat what you fancy. Bland food will be gentler on your stomach of course but there's no evidence to suggest that a bland diet shortens the duration of an illness and they no longer recommend it as necessary.

Post stomach upset, I always crave ready salted crisps. The salt is obviously good for the dehydration.

If you aren't hungry, don't worry. Concentrate on rehydration. Dioralyte is good if somebody can get some for you as it'll replace some of the stuff you've lost.

Sounds like food poisoning tbh.

Same boat here @Badbudgeter - sending solidarity vibes. Water is all I can keep down but I'm so low on energy and have a deadline to meet by 5pm. Don't know how I'll do it...

Might be best to wait 24 or 48 hrs with just water /dioralyte to let it all settle ?

ThreadExterminator · 30/06/2023 10:51

Definitely replace electrolytes. When you get really dehydrated water isn't enough (and can even make it worse if you feel thirsty and gulp a lot down).

Diarolyte, Smartwater or look up St Marks rehydration recipe (you just need water, sugar, salt but in very very precise quanities)

If you start passing bright red blood, go straight to A&E. Don't waste time posting here asking if you should, just go.
When you feel like you can eat again stick to small portions of bland food - chicken broth, scrambled eggs made with a splash of milk and salt, dry toast, plain cooked rice.

Poor you it is brutal isn’t it? Luckily I’m off today as first day of the holidays here. I had grand plans to tackle the garden. I’m very grateful the Dc are understanding and self sufficient enough to make cereal/ sandwich whilst I die on the sofa.

I have this too, it's agony with the cramps and I'm basically just passing water. It's awful!

In that case count your blessings and not your worries! I have preschool twins and they've become feral all of a sudden seeing me so lethargic- I'm not proud of having shouted at them a few times. Also, I don't want to pass what I have to them, so kisses have been limited to shoulders and backs. I couldn't put them to sleep last night and this morning one of them had a look of contempt on his face! I have just been sick again but this time, I don't feel hot and clammy like I'm going to pass out so maybe that's a good thing. It's going to be a loooooong weekend...

Badbudgeter · 30/06/2023 14:10

I tried a little bit of toast but just felt hot, clammy and dizzy. Ended up heading back to sofa for a three hour snooze. Kids are delighted with unfettered screen time.

I’m supposed to go to work tomorrow for a 10 hour shift. Lone worker so I won’t infect anyone and there are toilets. I’m hoping it starts to pass today.

No way are you ready for a 10hr shift... Do yourself a favour, stay home and recover properly. Get well soon hopefully.
