Car insurance for new drivers - Not Marmalade

Who are you using to insure a new driver?

Our insurance company doesn’t want to insure new drivers.
We are using Marmalade for dc1 but you can’t have two black box in the same car so we can’t use them for dc2….

Any recommendation of who we could use instead?

Direct Line.

DS is insured with Ticker, but that is with a black box. You can't have two policies on the same car unless it's a bolt on policy so I'm a bit confused by your question.

Simplestead · 29/06/2023 17:54

Direct line ...my DS has an app...not a black box

VanCleefArpels · 29/06/2023 18:31

any recommendation here is not guaranteed to be the best fit for you given that quotes rely entirely on your personal situation: where you live, where you keep the car, what kind of car, credit ratings, accident history of people in the household / named drivers, occupation etc etc so your best bet is a comparison site

However it sounds like your young drivers are going to be sharing the same car? In which case always approach the current insurer first and see if the second child can be a named driver on the current policy

The marmalade black box can cope with 2 drivers- we all have the app and it links to whoever is driving the car. will be far cheaper to have 2 young drivers on the same policy- only one can drive at a time so the risk is shared.

That’s interesting because when we contacted them, they said it wasn’t possible!!
Will try again.

QueenBees did you get a successful answer from Marmalade insurance. DS has had pay as you go and is in 2nd year of insurance. DD has just passed but can't add her as both can't use same Black Box. What alternative did you find?

QueensBees · 26/02/2024 19:45

Nope.
I got a completely different insurance (Admiral) that would take both of them. No black box and a decent price.

is the admiral insurance for your 2 on your car or did you get them a car? I have Volvo car insurance and don’t want have them on my policy I want them to have their own insurance so they can earn no claims etc. this is what marmalade currently do for my son. Thanks

QueensBees · 26/02/2024 21:12

They are both on my car

sorry one final question. Do you change your policy to admiral and then added them both as named drivers?

QueensBees · 27/02/2024 12:49

No, I did a quote with them with all 3 (well 4 with dh) of us.

I think the best is to go through one of those comparaison websites (so you fill details only once!) and see what they say. There are so many options even within one company!

Collingwood Learner Insurance

Taff67 · 27/02/2024 13:27

Sorry, just seen for new driver not learner!

JonkeyKong · 23/03/2024 17:10

We have just run into exactly the same problem. Both our children have passed their test. Our son (who passed first) is covered by a Marmalade pay as you go policy. But we cannot now insure our daughter with Marmalade. The problem is that the black box gadget won’t work for 2 young drivers using the same car. Has anyone found another pay as you go policy (which is like Marmalade's) which resolves the problem? We haven’t yet!

Adrianocellenteno · 25/03/2024 13:49

Same issue here 2 kids can’t go on same marmalade policy. Looking for a similar service from another company for #2.
