What to do about a birthday gift?

I was close to a girl for many years. I won't say in what way. She has a significant birthday coming coming up. Think (18,21). I don't want to give away too much info.

Lately, over the past year or two - the moods from her is unreal. I don't like being around her any more due to her being stroppy. She can put on a smile when she wants. She's not very nice. She's full of sarcasm and critisism while she lounges about and does little herself.

I used to give a significant birthday gift in previous years (like 50 pounds) but at this stage it breaks my heart to spend another cent on her. She's not going to appreciate it anyways.

What do you guys think? Will I maintain the previous years or reduce the amount or give a voucher or ignore the birthday?

Hard to say with some details missing. My answer could change depending on if this ‘girl’ is a friend, niece, or your daughter. And whether she’s turning 18 or 40. But it seems you don’t like her and are not obliged to give her anything, so just don’t.

It's bosses child. Think significant birthday - 16,18, 21.

She used to be lovely but she's now full of critisism, sarcasm and mood.

Well no one can force you to give her a gift. Is she just a moody/hormonal teenager or is she just not a nice person generally? If you feel obliged for whatever reason, just give a card, but I would only do that if you genuinely wish her a happy birthday. I certainly wouldn’t be giving away £50, that’s more than I give my own nieces!

In our family we also stop presents/money for nieces and nephews once they reach 18 so if she’s above 18 (21st etc) then just stop!
