You have £100k to spend to make your life happier

Not allowed to spend it on anything sensible like paying off mortgage, debts, investing, school fees etc.

It must be spent on indulgent treats/experiences/holidays or anything else you fancy.

What would you choose?

I am embarrassed to say but I have just been given a completely unexpected inheritance of about this amount .. I have never inherited anything before as my parents had nothing to leave. I am about 8 years from retirement.
i am planning

  • a small pair diamond earring studs to remember my lovely aunt
  • a car to replace my aging fiesta ..do I go sensible with a Toyota Corolla hybrid or buy a little Fiat 500.. bright red.. Italian style but maybe not as reliable or safe
  • pay the remainder of our mortgage
  • the rest ( just more than half) in savings
MyFaceIsAnAONB · 29/06/2023 07:46

Life/career coach £1200

Few grand on some studio sessions 🎤

Shit ton of art and music supplies and kit out a room in the house just for that

Holidays and offset my emissions 😄

Campervan but think that would take me over £100k

SophiaElise · 29/06/2023 07:46

Expensive holidays over the next 5 years - I'd budget £20K a year.

Why embarrassed? That’s great and this is anonymous! Enjoy it! But, of course, sorry for your loss.

LunaTheCat · 29/06/2023 07:47

Oh gosh.. just saw to make ice happier with no mortgage or savings. In that case

  • buy the fiat
  • another dog (or 3!)
  • some new furniture
  • somebody to deep clean home
  • holiday until money runs out.
Summerishere123 · 29/06/2023 07:48

Spend 20k sorting the bathroom, getting house painted, garden doing.
Get a huge catio made with a cat jungle gym.
New car
Holiday to disney with the kids

ThisIsACoolUserName · 29/06/2023 07:54

How British is this thread, that so many of us want our teeth fixing! 😬

UvieT · 29/06/2023 07:55

I will have a birthday party( I have never had one) and then go on a really nice holiday.

Cucucucu · 29/06/2023 07:56

Holiday home

Mumtothreegirlies · 29/06/2023 08:00

I’d buy a motorhome and some land.

SatelliteStomper · 29/06/2023 08:13

Campervan (to replace the one I stupidly sold years ago)
Some amazing holidays (because I know that dh will refuse to sleep in the campervan after the first night, even though he says he will)
Teeth fixed for both of us!
New bathroom
Get the garden landscaped and planted up
An engagement ring - never had one as I thought they were a waste of money...but secretly I'd really love one.

Baneofmyexistence · 29/06/2023 08:14

But paying my debts or renovating the house would make me a lot happier even if it is sensible!

If I had to blow it though, I would have a big holiday, a new wardrobe and a fancy handbag. DH would want a car.

YukoandHiro · 29/06/2023 08:15

Family holiday to somewhere amazing - maybe Peru or Madagascar - travelling with a private chef. Both my children have multiple allergies and carry epi pens and we rarely go abroad now as it's just too stressful trying to make sure they're safe. So this would be my dream!

Baneofmyexistence · 29/06/2023 08:16

Oh, and therapy! Definitely many sessions with a decent therapist!

ashamed1235 · 29/06/2023 08:16

ND assessments for my children and for me.
Good therapy
Possible Steiner type school for my home educated daughter (due to mainstream not managing her needs).
Personal trainer and family David Lloyd gym membership
Cleaner
Garden makeover
New bathroom
Various other house updating
My partner would say a camper van but not me!
Holidays

BlackeyedSusan · 29/06/2023 08:17

Lots of little things so I don't have to worry about food costs and other day to day stuff.

Holiday cottage for two weeks instead of one.

wildfirewonder · 29/06/2023 08:17
  1. A campervan (50k)
  2. A big tree-planting scheme in our neighbourhood (25k)
  3. Funds to the school library & language labs (25k)
DiaNaranja · 29/06/2023 08:17

A deposit on a house so I finally have the choice and means to go it alone.

Enko · 29/06/2023 08:19

Can I pay off my.childrens student debt? If so thats my choice.

Also a Eames chair
And holidays

WhoisLucasHood · 29/06/2023 08:24

Finish this doer upper building site we're living in and some far flung holidays. I'd like to take the kids long haul.

Soapyspuds · 29/06/2023 08:27

Can I spend it on some boring investment like gold, Isas or premium bonds?

Having six figures tucked away knowing I could walk out of my job anyday and be secure for a while would make me far happier than any material 'things'.

I would not even say I dislike my job! But having that option would be really nice.

KohlaParasaurus · 29/06/2023 08:31

Heart says use the money to move house with a slight upgrade in location/specifications, or put it in pensions for my children. Head says give the lot to a grassroots charity and have input on how it's used. Spirit of the thread says buy a car that I'll really enjoy driving and go on a few exotic guided hiking/cycling tours.

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 29/06/2023 08:33

I've already paid for my teeth straightening so now I'd get composite bonding to perfect them

Renovate my garden

Holidays!!!

Driving lessons for my kids so they can give me lifts for a change

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/06/2023 08:34

Honestly all I would want to do is put down a deposit on my first house. I'm 42
