Dad told me I’d put on weight

I know he meant well and also he’s not wrong but I feel humiliated. For context I’m 5’3 and weigh around 145 pounds so yes I have weight to lose. But I fit into a size 10-12 still (must be vanity sizing) so don’t think I look very overweight.

Is your relationship normally quite blunt and open or is this unusual?

ejbaxa · 28/06/2023 20:18

I expect he doesn’t realise that those comments make things worse and hurt.

Slippa · 28/06/2023 20:19

This is unusual tbh but I would say his social skills can be off (I suspect he has Asperger’s) and will not skirt around things. He does always mean well. He’s never told me that before though.

I’m also about to for a week’s holiday with my boyfriend and have nothing to wear, need to go shopping next couple of days and this has just plunged me into thinking oh shit I’m hideous. My boyfriend loves me and tells me I’m beautiful all the time

What was the context? Were you complaining about having nothing to wear?

Gowlett · 28/06/2023 20:21

My mother has said it to me. But it’s not unusual for her. When I lost weight, every time I glanced at cake she’d say - You put weight on sooo easily!!!

LocalHobo · 28/06/2023 20:22

Apart from on Mumsnet, putting on weight is not a negative thing. Obviously a size 10 is not overweight, so potentially you look stronger or more resilient?

satellitesunshine · 28/06/2023 20:22

does it matter, are you happy? it’s just a body, if you’re happy who cares?

AnnaMagnani · 28/06/2023 20:23

My DM used to think this was an appropriate conversation opener.

I could travel 2 hours to see her, and she'd mention this when I was still in the porch and before saying hello.

Can't recall how it stopped but I think I went ballistic and the message dropped.

caringcarer · 28/06/2023 20:23

My Dad told me I ought to work on losing weight once. He wasn't wrong I did need to lose weight but it stung a bit at the time. He said it from a good place of wanting me to be healthier but it upset me at the time.

Slippa · 28/06/2023 20:41

@GoodChat no he just took me aside and asked it in a concerned tone. I was wearing a t shirt so may be more obvious. Still hurt 😂
