For those who know Majorca well, what town would you stay in if you were a solo traveller, 40s, wanted nice pools, wanted a nice beach with sunloungers, walkable to shops and restaurants. Not a party place but busy enough so that there's choice of restaurants etc. Not too close to the airport if poss. Preferably somewhere with good scenery. Thanks.

I like Palma, Puerto Pollensa and Port de Soller

Cala D Or is my happy place and have been there on my own and with family. Pretty beaches and coves restaurants bars, shops, marina boat trips etc .Definitely not too noisy or tacky. Its about 45-60mins from the airport. About 80 euros for a taxi .

As above - Illetas is a lovely resort just outside Palma or Andratx

Puerto pollensa is nice but I personally don't find it as scenic as CalaDor.

EVHead · 28/06/2023 11:37

Palma Nova is quiet. Next door to Magaluf but you’d never know. Handy for airport.

Puerto Pollensa is nice.

Remotecontrolatmyside · 28/06/2023 11:40

So am I right in thinking Cala Dor is prettier but Puerto Pollensa has more to do?

Puerto pollensa is stunning at the pine walk end

ComtesseDeSpair · 28/06/2023 11:55

Another vote for Puerto Pollensa. If you’re anything of a cyclist there are some lovely trails, particularly out to Cap Formentor and up to the monastery at Lluc. We hired bikes and basically cycled everywhere out of the main town.

Puerto Pollensa is quite big - it has lots of big hotels, and is quite 'resorty'. There is a nice old town, and the beach is nice, but I'd go to one of the smaller places if I was you. I haven't been to Cala d'Or, but it looks lovely!

We stayed here once https://www.hotelcala.com/en/our-hotel/. It had a lovely pool/bar, and was located within easy walk of some nice restaurants/bars and a lovely little beach. It wasn't a typically pretty Mallorcan village, but it would probably meet your brief.

Depending on how important the beach aspect is to you, you could look at Valdemossa (beautiful town), or Fornalutz (absolutely gorgeous little village). We stayed at the latter, and enjoyed the pool at our hotel, and then went to the beach in Port de Soller, or walked along the coast elsewhere.

We visited Alcudia which was quaint and pretty, but all the accommodation seemed quite a bit more expensive than PP and surrounds.

Wellgoodforyou · 28/06/2023 12:04

Puerto Pollensa has a very flat straight sea front with pine trees whereas Cala D’Or has lots of smaller cove type beaches with a lovely view from apartments if you are right by the sea. Most swimming pools sit at the front of accommodation generally facing the sea. Probably worth googling OP to compare. Both lovely places but CalaDOr is my own personal favourite .

cherryassam · 28/06/2023 12:10

Cala D’Or is very pretty. Has a choice of lovely beaches, Cala Gran can get very busy. So many nice restaurants along the marina.

Port de Soller is beautiful with mountains surrounding the bay. You can get the tram up to Soller as well, which is a scenic journey and means easy access to more facilities etc. There are two beaches, both lovely.

Remotecontrolatmyside · 28/06/2023 12:40

This all sounds great. Thanks everyone.

Cala d'Or definitely. So lovely and has everything you mentioned. I've been loads of times with family but can't wait to head their on my own as soon as I can. Imo it's the perfect place for a solo holiday. Very safe.
