Is there sympathy for consultants striking?

Just as the thread title says, do you feel sympathy for the consultant doctors pay demands. I understand their pay has not gone up for many years meaning they have had a cut in real terms. That being said a quick google tells me they start on 88k and have regular pay rises not based on performance.
They are hardly on the bread line are they?

Not annually but accumulative.

It’ll take me 4 years to earn a million. Less actually, with cross-cover payments and other allowances.

And I’m LMAO at how you went from calling ‘absolute BS’ on my salary first to saying well of course Ireland has to pay that to attract people once presented with proof.

What a wind-up merchant with a massive chip on your shoulder.

So again you are misleading. I said you could earn double that in London privately. Not that your salary is in any way lacking, only that there are greater opportunities to earn much more in other places.

Perhaps it is a good idea to read our comments again so you can refresh your memory.

You are clearly earning a fortune. In a short space of time - multi millions.

In London and other major cities it is the same story and consultants can earn multiples of that figure.

So I think we are in broad agreement that this segment of healthcare professionals have huge earning potential. They do not need a pay rise when the poor souls at the bottom end of society can’t even afford their food shopping.

There has not been any acknowledgment on here whatsoever of the working poor footing your astronomical pay demands bill.

Well NZ is similar to Ireland in terms of advancement and population size. Australia is only fractionally better.

We had a short term project in Dubai and quite frankly it couldn’t end fast enough. You are very welcome to try it out, I suggest you don’t sign a two year contract or longer.

Yeah I'm guessing you don't travel very well 😂😂😂

And I am trying to point out to you that in a very small country like Ireland the opportunity to earn millions and career progression will be limited - extremely limited.

A tiny country at just 5 million with a very small capital city versus 70 million in the U.K. and a global capital that is London with many cutting edge and world class hospitals and healthcare.

It is incomparable.

So of course Ireland will have to pay more to attract professionals because the consultants will be sacrificing opportunities and advancement to do so, with respect.

So your argument is that consultants should leave the NHS and work for the Portland Hospital/Cleveland Clinic in London, and then they can make almost as much as a consultant working for HSE in Kerry?

I bet that knowledge is really helpful for people wishing to access the NHS is places like Bradford. Or London for that matter. You may earn so much you will never need to use the NHS, but most people rely on it.

My argument is you can easily combine both and retire with multi millions at a relatively young age. You seem hellbent on pigeon holing NHS or private. In reality most experienced consultants do both effortlessly.

Let’s talk about those working in absolute poverty to foot the most enormous, unreasonable consultant pay demands shall we?

And maybe their children and the suffering.

Many on here have made it clear they don’t care about the patients, do they feel
the same about the working poor PAYING their exorbitant wages?

GCalltheway · 28/06/2023 14:40

It is tone deaf.

Consultants and junior doctors are already an incredibly privileged group in society - what clever working class kid can even possibly hope to consider 6 years in Med school?
No doubt you will reel off one but in the main these are privately educated, wealthy children that can take the financial hit and in time they will reap huge dividends for their efforts.

The working class kid might be equally intelligent - work just ss hard but will never ever hope to earn anything like the kinds of salaries you take for granted.

You have been drinking too much cool aid.

What you are doing is deeply unethical.

You're talking nonsense. I am a consultant. In the NHS. I don't even have A levels and I came from a working class family, we didn't even have central heating growing up in the 90s! I just happened to be smart and determined :)

How did you get a med place without at least 4 A stars 😂😂 pull the other one! 🤓

Of course we won’t be paying! The magic tree at the end of the garden will magically produce billions.

Cool aid anyone?
Free money?
Money trees?

Even Labour are refusing to agree to the ridiculous demands

Have you actually read the drivel
you have posted?

Your exorbitant demands will be paid for by pensioners returning to the work force??! Jesus. This is really desperate stuff, unbelievable fairytale economics. I can see why you choose medicine and not finance put it that way.

You're showing your lack of sense again.

An access to medicine course is for those without A levels.

Have you heard of google? It's really helpful sometimes. :)

Stop being so rude. Educate yourself before you start spouting more vitriol and utter rubbish.

GCalltheway · 01/07/2023 22:59

I will leave you to it. I know what’s required for heavens sake much of my cohort have jumped through years of academic hurdles to become doctors, if you feel you can study medicine with a bunch of mediocre GCSEs there is nothing more I can add.

HMPPS · 01/07/2023 23:03

@FullTimeFurore thanks

@GCalltheway my Russell Group uni was more than happy to accept me to the School of Medicine without a single A level :)

Why are you so angry? I think you're jealous and extremely right wing. Not a good look.

It's not my fault I make a decent sum after almost 20 years of night shifts, exams, and endless long days of hard work.

I also happen to want to live comfortably in return for my sacrifice. My family have sacrificed too. They still hardly see me.

I work in a super niche specialty. It's dangerous and emotionally exhausting. I stay late nearly every day.

I'm bitter that I couldn't afford private school for my kids before they reached adulthood. Previous generations of doctors could. I was stuck with shit comprehensives.

I pay >£50000 in tax annually. Yes I have a private practice. Otherwise I'd still be subjecting my kids to a 2 bed terrace in a Northern town - I didn't work this hard for that, so I worked every weekend to supplement my income to afford this big detached house.

I shouldn't have had to work 7 days a week as a doctor, to afford some comfort. I am a consultant now, still working 7 days in order to pay down this mortgage so I can afford it when the interest rates shoot up at the end of our fixed rate.

Send more nonsense my way, I'll be happy to reality check it. Your opinion doesn't pay my bills or feed my family.

Yes please leave everyone else to it.

No, consultants most definitely do not earn more in London which you seem to think is centre of the world.

Yes Ireland ‘of all places’ pays far better and is much more sought after.

No, the Uk does not have some cutting edge healthcare system compared to other developed countries ( including Ireland that you so look down upon). Things are far more ‘run down’ and ‘1970s’ in many nhs settings due to underfunding compared to Ireland and other developed countries.

No there are no better opportunities in the Uk and I have no idea what this ‘cutting edge ’ or ‘works class’ hospitals are that you speak of

It’s the Uk that has a recruitment and retention problem for doctors. Not Ireland.

try google before you make a fool of yourself ‘calling BS’
when the salary scales are there for all to see.

Are you 12? A* grades did not exist when most consultants took their GCSEs and A levels. My own offer was BBB, an entirely standard offer in the 90s.

I’m actually wondering if this is a child or teenager who didn’t get into med school this year (but others in “their cohort” did).

Would explain the batshit comments about doctors owning private jets, the lack of numeracy, the lack of understanding that Ireland is a separate country to the UK, and the lack of awareness that A* grades at A level are a new thing. And the fact she seemingly gets sent to bed each night at 10pm.

HMPPS · 02/07/2023 00:53

@Saschka

Haha the last line!

Private jets my ass. I refuse to fly Ryanair but I trawl Skyscanner for direct flights on other countries budget airlines.

I have standards, but I also have a budget.

we are arguing with a disgruntled teenager/ v young adult!

No, I'm going with the trailing spouse theory.
