I think I’ve binned a pile of cash by mistake

I can’t believe I’ve been so stupid. It was my birthday at the weekend and I opened some of my presents/ cards in bed and I remember putting the cash on my bedside cabinet. Later in the day I took my cards, some presents and the rubbish / recycling downstairs. I now can’t find the cash anywhere and think I must have put it in one of the envelopes. The recycling was emptied this morning. I feel sick.

Oh my goodness. Take a breath and then try looking again.

Is the cash in your purse or handbag for example? Ie was your aim to put the envelope into your handbag?

FrenchandSaunders · 28/06/2023 09:42

Oh no, might it have fallen down behind the cabinet?

I nearly did this .... DH had put a wad of cash in the pocket of an old suit in his wardrobe. I put it in a charity bag .... thankfully wasn't collected before I mentioned it and it was hastily retrieved 😀

Oh god …feel sick for you ! Am sure you have checked in obvious places ie bed side drawer ,underwear drawer …that’s my favourite place for putting something safe ! Do you have drawers in your lounge that you put stuff crap in for safekeeping ? Good luck!

TattiePants · 28/06/2023 09:48

I had 2 separate piles of cash, both with £180 in. One is on the kitchen table and the other one missing. I’ve been under and inside every piece of furniture in my bedroom, checked through all the books I got and in my new handbag, nothing.

Just checked every shelf in the lounge where I put my cards and not there either.

Ok. Worse case scenario - it's gone.

It was birthday money so a bonus. And so you haven't actually LOST anything- try to pretend you never had it.

I don't known if that would work I'd feel sick too. I'm sorry x

Ihatepickingausername3 · 28/06/2023 10:07

I hope you find it

TattiePants · 28/06/2023 10:19

@veryfluffyfluff that’s what I’m trying to think. At least it wasn’t money for essential bills.

If you can't actually remember putting the cash in one of the envelopes, there's still a chance it's in your home somewhere! Where did you put the presents you took downstairs, have you looked there? Was there a reason you sorted the cash into two identical amounts, and if so could that reason mean you might've put the other 180 quid in a particular place?

I do feel for you OP, I'd be gutted if I'd thrown it out by mistake!

baroqueandblue · 28/06/2023 10:55

Dressing gown pocket, maybe, although at this time of year that's unlikely.

Why did you specifically put one pile on the kitchen table, could that help explain why you might've put the other pile somewhere else?

TattiePants · 28/06/2023 11:15

Still no sign. Definitely not in any pockets or with other presents. I went to my mum’s on the afternoon so the cash I brought back from there was put on the kitchen table. I don’t remember bring the other pile downstairs but can’t figure out what else I could have done with it.

This is reminding me of 20+ years ago when we’d returned home after being alway for Christmas and NY and I couldn’t find my purse. I never did find it and it must have gone in the bin without me realising. I know it doesn’t sound like it but I am usually very careful with money!

Well I wasn’t stupid enough to put it in the recycling after all. I went through all my new books but hadn’t looked in an old book I started reading last week but didn’t continue. I vaguely remember putting the cash in there now so it wouldn’t get mixed up with the rubbish! Phew!

Good news!

leeloo1 · 28/06/2023 17:41

Hurray! So glad you found it. 😊

OhComeOnFFS · 28/06/2023 17:42

So is all of it there? That's a relief!

Musicaltheatremum · 28/06/2023 17:44

Expensive book mark but glad you found the money!

adriftabroad · 28/06/2023 17:44

Brilliant! I put cash in poetry books!

TattiePants · 28/06/2023 17:48

Yes it’s all there and will be getting banked tomorrow before I manage to lose it again. I’m blaming Steinbeck. I read the first 20 pages of The Grapes of Wrath last week and wasn’t feeling it so pushed it to one side. I checked so many books this morning but missed that one.

Well done Tattie, what a relief.

JadeSeahorse · 28/06/2023 18:13

Fabulous news! 👍

Oblomov23 · 28/06/2023 18:18

Hoorah!

Wbeezer · 28/06/2023 19:00

Glad it worked out, unlike the time I put everyone's Christmas cash in my purse to take to the post office and then left my purse in the basket at the co-op. It got handed to a staff member but another less scrupulous staff member helped himself to £450! Not caught on camera so not charged but I never saw him in there again so I think he was let go.
