UTI turned into Kidney Infection....ow, ow,ow!

I'm waiting for a call back from the GP

Please just let me moan

A 3 day course of antibiotics ( Nitrofurantoin) did nothing. Started Trimethoprim yesterday but I'm worse.

My bladder is sore, it hurts constantly .
I have a burning pain in my centre lower back ( possibly not where I'd suspect kidney pain to be), I feel swollen and clammy. There is some weird sensation of movement a bit like when a baby is moving , if you've been pregnant you probably know.

I also have some weird nerve pain going on. Like mild pins and needles.

Co codamol hasn't made a jot of difference.
Not sure if GP will change my antibiotics after just one day and increase the painkillers or if I should be in hospital??

I was very tempted to go to A and E last night as the pain kept me awake.

I read loads of old threads on here about kidney infections. Most people found them very painful.
A UTI turned up to 100!

Oh, and I'm not pregnant, I'm too old.

If the pain is unbearable please seek help. I ended up in hospital for 3 days a few years ago with a kidney infection. Never felt as ill in my life.

Currently in A and E on advice of GP

I'm glad you're in A&E
I still remember my worst one and it was 25 years ago

I’m glad you’re at A&E. I had a kidney infection a few years ago that was resistant to the various oral antibiotics I was given, it was quite scary. I ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics. They can be very nasty. I hope you start to feel better soon, I remember mine clearing up quite quickly once they found the correct treatment.

Thank you. I've been given liquid morphine for the pain ,which hasn't worked yet
Bloods done and I'm waiting for the results
I've seen elderly people in beds in corridors.
A nice volunteer is offering drink and biscuits to patients. She said she used to work in a bank but when she retired she does 2 shifts per week.

I hope the morphine works soon and you're more comfortable
How nice that there are still volunteers. They only work in our hospital shop now

Solidarity OP, it's the worst pain! You've done the right thing by getting it treated ASAP, and PP's are right - the pain will reduce quickly once they've got the right treatment. I found that cefalexin was the only thing that worked for my milder infections at home, and IV antibiotics blasted out the worst ones in no time.

Keep your fluids up, avoid ibuprofen once you come home and take it easy. Fingers and toes crossed that you feel better soon.

Awful! I remember mine vividly...ended up with a catheter as I couldn't expel urine, everything had swollen so much. Was really poorly.
Amoxicillin was the only thing that sorted it out for me, I tried the two you've tried and they did nothing.

A kidney infection is horrific! I had one in the late 90s and still remember the excruciating pain. Hope the pain relief kicks in soon xx

LunaLoveFood · 28/06/2023 16:32

I had a kidney infection the day after I gave birth. The kidney infection pain was 100 x worse than giving birth. Fingers crossed the pain killers are now working.
