What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

You do realise they only need to give birth once, right?

Christ, I'm actually wrong on this one😂
Well, that's my thing I didn't realise then!!!

Do this the smell is so bad and it took us a plumber, builder, etc in to check what the smell was. Our plumber asked his work mates (we had tried everything to find out what the smell was) and one guessed this.

Yes this! This is the kind of info I’m looking for, thanks! Random stuff to do with the house that I should be doing, but I don’t know about. So I’m not 😂 thank you!

off to google how to do this exact thing right now…

The new random number/letter combos on veg etc instead of dates are dates in disguise.

ie F30 = June 30. A-Jan, b-feb etc

That's good to know - I still like to check dates on fruit and vegetable packets. 🌹

You know those information leaflets you get inside a packet of paracetamol? You can just throw them in the bin instead of keeping it in the box and having to fight to fit the file of medicine back in every time you have a headache.

Hahah love it

While I knew most babies are born bald, I didn't realise they have a little knob on their backs that you can turn to quickly grow hair.

Turn it clockwise and they sprout hair, anticlockwise and the hair retracts again.

Leggings designed for sport (as opposed to leggings designed for fashion) often have a small secret pocket in the waistband.

I discovered mine this week, instantly checked all my other leggings and yep, they all have pockets and I never knew.

Contact lenses have a right way up and a wrong way up. If it feels uncomfortable in your eye it is probably the wrong way up. There is a little etched symbol which shows the right way up. Also if you put one on your finger and hold it up to the light the edges will be more pointy if wrong and bowl shaped If right.

Trying this on the next baby I see.

I find it difficult to believe that the tiny amount of ammonia in wee mixing with with heavily diluted bleach would cause a reaction that was strong enough to be of any concern at all.

'W' is the only letter of the alphabet which is pronounced using its actual letter. I do not understand this one at all Confused

Neither do I

Not as gross as a beach littered with washed up used tampons.

Please don't flush them.

You can wrap them in loo roll and dispose properly in a bin. Many people keep a small, lined pedal bin in their bathrooms for used tampons and pads as well as sundry other rubbish.

Whilst i cant undo my decades of flushing I shall flush no more

in my meagre defence i will say we were taught in our pshe class in school you could flush them and that was one of the advantage of the tampon v pads (in addition to swimming)

Saw a clip from this morning the other day that casually said you weren’t to put wooden spoons in the dishwasher because they just swell up and hold onto bacteria. They all agreed like yeah that’s so obvious and I literally had a wooden spoon in the dishwasher at the time 😂

Apparently you should be using a washing machine and dishwasher cleaner once a month or something crazy too!

Cuckoos sing a major third at the start of spring, and a minor third as they get ready to leave for the summer.

Aww, this reminds of a rhyme my Nan thought me decades ago:

The cuckoo comes in April
He sings his song in May
He dips his tune in the middle of June
And in July he flies away

You can use sellotape to get pet hair or other fluff off your clothes

And from those tight places in the car like down the side of the seats, wrap it round your fingers.

That how strong the sun (UV) is has nothing to do with temperature but the time of year and level of cloud.

There's a bit at the back of your fridge your meant to drain or clean or something. Kept reading about it on TOMM last year but haven't got around to checking out yet Confused It's defo on my to do list but keeps getting bumped.

We were told this after many years of owning our fridge. We didn't know before. I'd advise cleaning it asap because it made me gag

Newestname002 · 28/06/2023 23:58

@Wigeon

On a totally different note, I was eating pasta salad at work earlier this week, that I'd made and brought from home and kept in my rucksack until lunchtime, and my colleague was appalled as she said it was very dangerous keeping cooked pasta out. She said it was as bad as leaving rice out and both should be refrigerated until you want to eat it. She said a friend if a friend actually died from pasta-related food poisoning.

Just buy yourself a small padded/insulated food bag and put a frozen pack (frozen overnight in your freezer) either side of your food in the bag and it will keep cool enough for safety until you're ready to eat. Especially if, like me, you add meat/fish to your lunch. 🌹

@knowthescore I’m not exactly a fan of blood from a nose bleed either.

Apparently it's tightly eighty and loosely lefty. I heard it on I'm a celebrity get me out of here last year. When I said 'oh how clever to help people know about which way to tighten nuts' DH said everyone must know that. Turned out my 16 year old DS knew it too and his older brother. Well no one ever told me that.

Supersimkin2 · 29/06/2023 00:02

Tightly 80?

YesItsMe44 · 29/06/2023 00:04

In response to US cars running on gasoline/diesel, I'm not sure what England's definition of gasoline is. The majority of US cars use gasoline. Choice of Regular Unleaded or Super Unleaded. Pickup trucks are about the only passenger vehicle that has the option to buy an engine that runs on diesel. Also delivery trucks, trucks hauling semi trailers, etc., run on diesel. It's supposed to be phasing out but that will depend on the environmentalists successfully getting the laws changed.

Yeah, I learnt that from my then four-year-old who had heard it on 'Handy Manny' I think 😅
