What other commonly known stuff should I know, but don’t?

I found out maybe 6 months ago that you should clean out the filter in your tumble dryer on a regular basis, as it gets full of fluff and lint and is a fire hazard. I had no idea. I’m an educated woman, generally reasonably intelligent and practical, I just had no idea you were supposed to do this. I don’t know how. My friend mentioned it in relation to something and I immediately told my husband who looked at me like some kind of moron - turns out he’s been doing it for years!

I’ve been thinking about it recently and I’m starting to wonder what other commonly known stuff you’re supposed to be doing in day to day life that I’m just not. Any ideas? Can be household related or just general life stuff really. I’m starting to wonder what I might be missing out on/ putting us in danger of.

Soft contact lenses - including non-varifocal ones - definitely have right and wrong way out. The edge is bevelled on the inside to fit flush with the eyeball. I find it quite noticable if they're in wrongly.

HRTQueen · 02/07/2023 16:05

Not sure if it’s been mentioned yet but shaving foam is great for cleaning marks on carpets better than carpet cleaning products

its also good to use to fad fake tan. I rub it on my hands after I have applied fake tan to get rid of the orange hands look

They have a right way out for sure, but unless they are varifocals etc they don't have aright way up.

No freckle in the right spot. On either forearm. So I guess I am mistaken in identifying as a woman. Will need to chastise my mother about this as having trained as a nurse and had 3 boys before I was born she should have been able to tell what sex I am. (trots off to get all its ID updated)

I didn’t know (and should’ve really as I was a teen when it happened) that when Czechoslovakia split in 1993 it became the Czech Republic (I knew that) but the other bit became SLOVAKIA! Now that I didn’t know.

WHAT??!!!

NEVER wash underwired bras in the washing machine, not on a hand wash cycle or in a little bag. It’s the action of the drum that kills bras. If you’re not one for hand washing in the sink( non bio, no fabric conditioner) wash them in the shower or bath, body wash or shampoo is great. Rinse , squeeze out in a towel, hang over shower/ door handle to dry, no radiators as heat will weaken/distort the wires. You’re welcome

It's fitted to an absolutely standard toilet pedestal. The thing to ask for is a 'soft close quick-release toilet seat'. I don't have the box any more to tell you the make and model, but there are lots in plumbing suppliers and Screwfix etc.

Someone will be along in a minute to say they put theirs in the dishwasher

@Yogachick Also the wire can come out and get through the holes of the drum and you need an engineer to get it out.

This happened in a student flat share I was in years ago and the guy said it is really common. So always put an underwired bra in one of those wash bags if you are putting it in the washing machine.

and NEVER wash one if the wire is looking vulnerable to poking through.

If it's difficult to turn a door key, padlock key a squirt of WD40 in the lock works like magic, also for stiff hinges etc.

A locksmith told me that he doesn't actually recommend WD40 for locks (something about doing the opposite of what its intended to do over time, but don't remember exactly). Instead he uses white grease. I'd never heard of it before but works a treat. Comes in a spray can, just like WD40.

comeondover · 03/07/2023 00:55

@Happyher it's a mumsnet trope. I've seen more than one thread about stuff you can clean in the dishwasher besides dishes, and there are people who say they put their loo brush in there. Maybe a windup.

I've got one, but I'd call it more of a mole. It's raised up.

Me too, it's got a slight bump but pretty much in the same place as smoothies

Talking to my colleagues the other day, I discovered I knew something they didn't.

Your petrol gauge in your car tells you what side your fuel cap is on.

I knew this, they didn't. They returned to the office the next day shocked by this revelation, because they checked their cars on the drive home, and yes the gauge did indicate the side the cap is on 🤣

Some older cars, at least in the USA, DON'T do that. My 1996 Saturn doesn't have an indicator for that (I've looked, extensively).

I’ve been wearing contact lenses for 40 years with no problems and have no idea which way up they go - think some one is having you on

I think the poster means what I call inside out. This applies to soft lenses not gas permeable.

Toric lenses DO have an indicator, but if you don't have astigmatism your lenses don't have a marker.

@ClickingTock123 i have 2, one on the front of my forearm and one on the back. Does this mean I’m an extra womanly woman? One is slightly raised if that makes a difference to my full on womanliness?

I wear tonic lenses as I have astigmatism and they have no marker and I don’t have to put them in a certain way up. Maybe some have a marker but mine don’t

This is why I could never buy dairy products again. Obviously they are "just cows" but still, removing babies repeatedly is pretty fucking cruel.

There is more and more research demonstrating that cows are capable of intense emotion and are much more intelligent than we acknowledge. The dairy industry is pretty horrific really - almost worse than meat. (And since I’ve already harshed the mellow, ‘free range’ eggs are another lie we tell ourselves.)

Toric lenses do have to be in your eyes a certain way up, otherwise they don't correct your astigmatism (in fact, they'll make it worse). They are heavier at the bottom so they should orient themselves correctly as long as they are floating on a layer of tears properly. I thought they all had a orientation mark at the bottom so the optometrist can check they're sitting correctly. However, I guess this might only be visible under UV on some lenses.

I was inspired by your shaving foam tips. I had a filthy fabric covered ottoman top so earnestly cleaned it last night with partners shaving foam & rinsed. Today it's pristine, like new 😀. Thank you!
Fake tan comes off with baby lotion also. Found out it's a paint stripper too when a bottle accidentally tipped over whilst I was away, lotion leeched out & stripped the paintwork on a bathroom unit. God knows what it does to babies skin, heinous stuff.

Be careful - TOILET SEATS ARE NOT A UNIVERSAL FITTING - check the measurement between the sticking down bits before you go to buy your new seat. Worth knowing in its own right.

Yes. This seat has some pretensions to being 'universal' or at least accommodating of various hole spacings. You mount the mounting pieces in the holes in the pedestal and each can be rotated (the hole that takes the prong on the seat is off centre) to allow quite a few cm variation in spacing. But yes, measure!

Good point. If we were allowed to edit I would have come back and explained that there are some 'universal' ones but even these need checking. But MN doesn't make life easy!

In case nobody else has mentioned it, hairspray is brilliant for getting biro marks out of fabric.
