Passport rules to the EU. Did you know....

...that your passport needs to have been issued within the last 10 years? It's not just a case of it still being valid or having x amount of months left. I've had 2 friends in the last few weeks get to the airport and been denied their holiday as they weren't aware of this rule. And they can't claim on insurance. I've seen others I didn't know who were turned away at the boarding gate.

Maybe you did know. But I thought I would share, just in case it helps one other person.

I'm not usually vindictive but I really hope it's all the people stupid enough to vote for Brexit who get caught out on this! They deserve it.

Yes, me too.
Absolutely zero sympathy for people suffering the consequences of their own free choice to vote Leave.

I’m easily confused and this wasn’t in my radar because I haven’t left the country since about 2005. But if I decide I’m going to go to Spain every summer from now on, does that mean I’ll need to renew my passport every 9 years instead of every 10 years? Sorry if that’s a stupid question. (Actually considering going to Spain but haven’t booked anything yet…)

dementedpixie · 29/06/2023 10:11

It would need to have 3 months remaining when you leave Spain so would need to renew by 9 years 9 months

There's another very recent thread about this, with some good explanations:

Well we can thank the stupid fuckers who voted Leave for this.

I'm glad I'm not the only person that feels like this.

Is this not pretty common knowledge now?

I thought it was back in 2020, but it seems not, given the sad face articles that keep appearing in the press.

This whole passport thing is so confusing. My OH’s passport is due to expire in June 2025, however it was issued in October 2014. So he’d need to renew by October 2024 to travel within the EU.

However, how does the three month rule work? Does he need to get a new passport by July 2024 in order to have the three months left? Or does that not count because it’s “valid” until June 2025?

To be honest for peace of mind we’ll probably renew next June but that part doesn’t feel very clear.

dementedpixie · 22/08/2023 22:00

The 3 month rule is supposed to be separate from the 10 year rule so the 3 months don't need to be within the new expiry date you have calculated.

JustAnotherUsey · 22/08/2023 22:07

I remember reading about it last year. Was thinking about booking a last minute holiday this summer but then realised my passport had technically expired...even tho it's got 10 months left on it! Stupid system.
