NAC (supplement) - anyone tried this? Have a question!

It's a long shot but thought I'd post. Started taking NAC (n-acetyl cysteine) and had a wonderful couple of weeks of increased energy. This has happened before - the increased energy lasts for about two weeks then just ends. As an ME sufferer, the energy spurt is quite wonderful - I get so much done!

Just curious about other people's experiences of NAC, if there's anyone out there!

Particularly people with ME/CFS.

Oh well, it was worth a try! 😁

I'd also be interested to know about people's experiences with NAC! I'm taking it to help with sleeping problems. Not sure if it's helping or not. The first time I took it, it had a dramatic effect, but not in a good way - it sent my heart crazy! That was in conjunction with magnesium.

I have ME and take this in powder form along with various other supplements. As far as I can tell it doesn't do much on its own for me, but mixed with D-Ribose (20g a day) it boosts my energy a bit.

I've been taking NAC for about 6 weeks and haven't really noticed any difference in energy levels etc. It's supposed to have a lot of benefits though so I'll keep taking it to the end of the pack, not sure if I'll get another batch after that though.

I have ME/CFS and became very depressed on NAC. Cleared immediately when I stopped taking it. I have found NMN and low dose naltrexone to be amazing though.

@rivercobbler - sorry to hear you became depressed on NAC - that's not a good result. Will look into the other supplements you mentioned, they're not things I've ever tried.

@NotTerfNorCis - It'd be great if NAC helped with sleeping problems, didn't realise that may be one of it's benefits. From my experience with it, I presumed it'd be hopeless for sleep as it gave me so much energy it felt incredible. I'm still taking it, despite no buzz any more, but sleep is still terrible! I do hope it works for you eventually, it's usually stated that supplements need to be taken for several weeks to see any benefit, I think?

It's such a strange experience - the magical energy buzz, being carried along thinking "this is what it's like to be normal!" and then, after approximately two weeks, totally back to normal! It even used to give me a rash on my neck (apparently a side effect) and I don't even get that anymore!

I take it whenever I feel I'm about to come down with a cold and it always keeps it at bay. I read somewhere that it works well for that.

I would take it everyday but it gives me reflux so I only take it occasionally.

rivercobbler · 08/07/2023 12:13

OP, you could try cycling it - come off it for a while and then try again, see if you get the uplift after a break.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 08/07/2023 13:17

@hammie46i - I've wondered if it gives me reflux though was never sure as take other supplements too. I'm taking them more carefully now, with food and with lots of water.

@rivercobbler - yes, thought about doing that. Wondering how long the break should be!

I was told they have to be taken on an empty stomach to work.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 09/07/2023 12:07

@hammie46i - interesting! Will try that tomorrow.

Tried taking the NAC an hour before breakfast today - still no results!

Will have to try coming off it and trying again in a few weeks.

@PunishmentRoundupWithJoon My problem is sleep apnea. The GP said he couldn't help unless I was practically falling asleep on my feet all day, and obviously I didn't want it to get to that stage. I researched it and saw NAC has helped people with sleep apnea. I've been taking it for months now, along with magnesium glycinate, omega 3 and vitamin D. I don't know if it's related, but the sleep apnea is definitely (touch wood!) improving.
