Are there any others here who were brought up speaking their mother tongue, but speak it very badly?
My parents were immigrants and at home we only spoke their language. Yet, I can't speak it very well. At all. I can't express myself in the way that I can in the other languages I speak, including the language of a country i had lived in for 7 years as a child. I don't even know how to say a simple phrase like "I love you". I found it very hard to speak with my parents and other relatives, and my mother used to say she doesn't understand what I'm saying (but my dad could understand me).
I never know how to answer when people ask me what my mother tongue is, as I think it implies the language I am most fluent in, but my mother tongue is the language I can speak least well.
I'm wondering whether this is just me, or if others have experienced this too?
