Can I say I can’t do certain things in jobs that are usually expected due to ASD?

I’m getting so much pressure to do certain jobs that I can’t do. I can’t do any public facing roles at all so retail is looking hugely problematic. I can’t do care work as I don’t like to touch others / be touched / deal with personal care. Yet retail and care are the only jobs apparently available to me and I have to job search.

I just can’t do it. Can I get PIP so that I don’t have to look for work as the stress is too much , I put all my energy into looking after my dc and the stress of just meetings and looking is impacting my parenting so an actual job is going to push me over the edge. Would I even get pip for ASD ? I am severely affected

Who says on retail and care are available to you?

Have you done any research into Jon's you could do?
Are you doing any training or volunteering that would enable you to do something else?
Have you thought about learning to code?

resignedtoit · 27/06/2023 08:39

It’s all I can find locally and that I’m qualified for and because I’m on UC I have to look but I’m burnt out and I’m looking into pip as I just don’t think I’m able to work currently

You can claim PIP with ASD. You csn probably find a charity like the Autism Society to help you fill out the form. Its about your care and mobility needs

Its a benefit that is paid to people who work as well though, so I dont think qualifying for pip would mean you dont have to look for work to claim unuversal credit.

I think there is another mechanism to say that but i dont know what it is

resignedtoit · 27/06/2023 08:40

No training or volunteering as I get too stressed and then I can’t sleep which then impacts parenting. Im having a call with a local centre later that supports adults with ASD as I’m feeling the pressure is enormous and I want some advice about pip as Ive read that can exempt me from work searches and sanctions

PIP isn't income related, you can work and claim it you're either eligible or you aren't- are you meaning you want to be effectively signed off as unable to do any job currently by the job centre and claim whatever ESA now is? Unfortunately that's extremely unlikely.

Tealknittedjumpers · 27/06/2023 08:43

I think you can ask them to assess you for limited capacity for work, and that will include the number of hours you can manage and the type of roles.

Chocolateship · 27/06/2023 08:44

Too add its worth asking though, it sounds sensible to get support from the local centre and see what they can recommend.

FatGirlSwim · 27/06/2023 08:44

You can claim PIP. Also LCWRA on UC. I recommend using an organisation like pipps professionals to help apply. PIP isn’t diagnosis based, it’s about how you manage the tasks of daily living.

You are entitled to reasonable adjustments at work and that can involve not doing certain tasks. However, the key word is reasonable, and you wouldn’t be able to take a care job and not be able to carry out any care, for example

Spendonsend · 27/06/2023 08:46

I've had a quick look. You need to speak to the benefit people and ask for a work capability assessment.
I would get support for this

Greenflamesburn · 27/06/2023 08:48

Have you thought of a call centre? Say with your local housing, so no cold calling as such. You will be customer facing as such but on the phone or other end of an email.
It's hard yes, but as an adult and a parent if you earning more gives you both a better quality of life its what we have to do.
Good luck finding something
Stop stressing over being a good parent. Only good parents worry about this so you are on yhe right track 😊

Thankyou I’m going to put a note on my journal as it’s just making me stressed and burnt out and affecting my day to day functioning

There is nowhere near enough support for people with autism. You cannot claim benefits even if autism makes you unable to work. They push you into a job that you can’t do and which is unsuitable for your needs as a disabled person. Then you get sacked because of your autism, and then you can’t claim benefits for months because you’ve been sacked.

I have personal experience of this - I have poor executive function due to autism, which means I struggle with time management. So I got sacked for being late. The job centre classed it as being “sacked for misconduct” and it was over three months before I was allowed to claim benefits. I would have been better off not getting the job in the first place.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 27/06/2023 08:51

I get PIP for ASD but standard rate care and no mobility. Its only £270 a month so isn't enough to be a replacement for work.

Have you considered what you are able to do and go from there? I currently work for the local Council in a back office job, but before this worked as a bank cashier which was behind a screen and with minimal but scripted conversations.

You have read incorrectly.

I think you probably need to look into the UC work capability elements. You need sick (fit) notes from your GP initially so I would speak to them asap.

That’s not the case at all. I have selective mutism so can’t cope with face to face situations, I get hemiplegic migraines triggered by over stimulation/ lights / stress etc. I have insomnia if I know the next day I have something I struggle with.

I have a condition where I vomit if triggered by certain things /smells etc due to my ASD.

I experience’shutdowns’ where I can’t do anything at all and I need a lot of daily support in areas. There are many many more issues that I face it’s too much to even explain here

You need to think what jobs you CAN do, and work towards doing those. There are free study options that would take the pressure off you to find work in the short term, and you could train for eg an accounting technician qualification, and then look for jobs that are mainly WFH.

Please don't look to quit work and settle into a very limited existence on barely adequate benefits. In the short term it might be a relief, but in the long term you would lose so much.

Its ok. They dont award the benefit on her feeling. There is a rigorous assessment process in place.

Zebedee999 · 27/06/2023 09:05

I don't understand how you can say you don't like meeting people (rules out retail) or touching people (rules out care) basically anything a job needs you can't do. Does this mean you never leave the house or go to a pub or supermarket etc? How did you meet your partner? I'm curious how you function day to day with these limitations?

HopefullyHopeless · 27/06/2023 09:06

This sounds so hard @resignedtoit 🙁 I really do think a charity is your best bet. Maybe there are some local support groups who could give advice?

More than anything I would get rid of the selective mutism as that is by far my biggest problem as I can’t communicate and that is the worst bit.

I wish I had qualifications so I’d have more choice but I didn’t go to school

I don’t even know what I like in general let alone for work as every day is just me trying to get through the day so I really don’t know
