Can I say I can’t do certain things in jobs that are usually expected due to ASD?

I’m getting so much pressure to do certain jobs that I can’t do. I can’t do any public facing roles at all so retail is looking hugely problematic. I can’t do care work as I don’t like to touch others / be touched / deal with personal care. Yet retail and care are the only jobs apparently available to me and I have to job search.

I just can’t do it. Can I get PIP so that I don’t have to look for work as the stress is too much , I put all my energy into looking after my dc and the stress of just meetings and looking is impacting my parenting so an actual job is going to push me over the edge. Would I even get pip for ASD ? I am severely affected

Maybe in certain areas like computer programming there are a higher proportion of people with ASD who will hire others like themselves.

This fits the male pattern of ASD though. ASD women are more likely to be creative than scientific.

Can you bake? You could bake special occasion cakes. Can you draw? You could get a job as an artist or do portraits for people.

These are very specific occupations.
Probably the most ineffective answer I have seen on here.
Even without autism , how many people on here could say this is how they earn a living.
OP you could look into being signed off from looking for work by your GP ( a sick line ) this could help you access some benifits, apart from UC

Ok. You carry on telling people who have a disability what you think their experience of the world is like from your non-disabled perspective. Meanwhile I will sit over here with decades of experience of being autistic, telling you that employers generally don’t want to hire people with autism.

I’m quoting from the Autustic Girls Network recent white paper published in conjunction with the Head of Limpsfield Grange.

I have a very artistic scatty disorganised ASD who would lose her mind coding.

Obviuosly l know nothing …..

My point is that there aren’t lovely companies full of autistics out there, just waiting to employ other autistics. Maybe there are a very few companies (probably in computing) who have a high proportion of autistic employees, where autistic people are doing the hiring and picking autistic candidates who they get along with. But in general the hiring across the board is being done by NT people who pick other NT people and exclude autistic applicants.

No there aren’t but it’s still possible, my DH business actively tries to employ people who are ND or have disabilities that aren’t necessarily physical, I wish more people would do the same

The companies that are trying are doing a really great job! But most are not trying, and some actively avoid hiring what they consider to be “problem” applicants. You wouldn’t believe the discrimination I’ve faced! They wouldn’t behave like this towards ethnic minorities or people with physical disabilities, but they’re quite happy to tell me to my face that they’re not hiring me because I’m too quiet and don’t make eye contact or smile enough.

Why are you so rude?

I was trying to help op unlike a lot of people on here and you say its the most ineffective answer you've seen. I know a lot of people that make a living out of these occupations that's why I suggested it.

I’m so sorry to hear that, the employees that we have are a credit to us & I wish more companies would look beyond the restrictions that ND people have as in the right environment they’re super people & we wouldn’t be without them

Why have I been so rude ? I could have been a lot ruder but I held back .
Says it all when you know a lot of people making a living baking and drawing.
Meanwhile back here on planet earth,
Some posters are a lot more understanding of the OPs difficulties and struggles, and not suggesting some nonsensical ways of making a living.

@Archeron Maybe in certain areas like computer programming there are a higher proportion of people with ASD who will hire others like themselves. But in the majority of workplaces the people hiring are NT, and they don’t like autistic people

This is exactly what I am saying. In CERTAIN areas in certain industries there are a really high proportion of people with ASD. They like to work with, manage, and employ people exactly like themselves. If a bubbly, confident, hand shaking, eye contacting candidate rocked up the manager would literally run for the hills. There are now quite a LOT of these areas, and quite a diverse range of jobs overall over these different areas, certainly not just computer programming or the like.

My point was the way to go is to identify all of these possibilities, see what of these may fit and then determine how to move into such work. It sure beats trying to jam a square peg in a round hole time after time and getting the same result. A simple case of determining where the square holes are. Or, you could just throw your hands up and say ‘no one will ever employ me’, even though this is not true for many others with ASD.

Hi how did you go on? I understand what you mean about not being able to touch people. I used to do care work, but touching people made me cringe, however I love animals and can touch them, clean them etc with no problems.
