Do I have to deed poll? Or how is it done? I'm going to double barrel with my own name if that makes any difference?

If you Google 'change name after marriage double barrel' everything you need comes up

glast · 27/06/2023 08:07

I don't think you have to change it by deed poll, you just start using your new name. Change it on bank, passport etc
That's what I was told at the register office

Yes if you're not changing it to just his name you need a deed Pol however this can be done for free. I have personal experience as I changed my name back to my maiden name ten years ago after my divorce and then when I married last year changed it to a double barrelled name that was first part of my maiden name ( also double barrelled) and my husbands name.
I used this website for mine both times and have had zero problems changing bank accounts, passports etc. worth printing on nice paper and getting several originals produced when you do it so you can change details with multiple places at the same time.

Don't forget you need to register the change with hmrc so your NI number tallies with your correct name. I assumed this happened automatically on marriage until I was trying to find out the forecast for my state pension.

www.hitched.co.uk/wedding-planning/organising-and-planning/changing-your-name/ I found this useful

newrubylane · 27/06/2023 10:20

And according to that link you can double barrel without a deed poll.

dementedpixie · 27/06/2023 10:23

You shouldn't need a deed poll to double barrel your name. Just use your marriage certificate and tell the bank, dvla, passport office, etc the name you want to be known as

Thanks all. I did Google but I got a confusing set of results that didn't make it clear re the deed poll Situation and it seems some people here think deed poll and some don't too!

I didn't use a deed poll after marriage. Double barrelled name, provided proof of marriage to bank, etc. and used new name from then on.

dementedpixie · 27/06/2023 12:39

If the new surname is clearly derived from the existing 2 surnames then a deed poll isn't needed. If its a totally new surname or your add in a different element to your names then you'd need a deed poll.

Kalodin · 27/06/2023 12:44

We just showed our marriage certificate to everyone and that's been enough.

Yarnysaura · 27/06/2023 13:04

A deed poll is not required to change name, legally there is no requirement to have an 'official' name change document, though it can be useful at times. I did mine yonks ago with a statutory declaration but it's never been asked for.

In England you just start using whatever name you want. For the bank and passport, a copy of your marriage certificate is sufficient.
