No double meaning , but real melons , no matter what variety , or keeping until they are ripened , they have no taste at all !

Melons have always been a bit hit or miss, but it does seem to be hard to find a good one at the moment. Natoora - stocked at Ocado - have a nice melon but unless on very special offer, if requires remortgaging - £9.50!

Maddy70 · 27/06/2023 10:42

Still tasty here in Spain. I wonder if the transportation etc brexit delays et Al are having an impact on quality ?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/06/2023 10:46

I started a thread about this last summer (I must say nobody else cared about this burning issue Grin) and the situation has not improved. Up until that point we were consistently getting large, ripe, delicious melons. Then suddenly the melons all shrank, and got either dry and woody, or rotten tasting, or no taste at all, and expensive too. We've basically given up and moved on to pineapples instead.

I doubt it's Brexit they've been overpriced and shit in Ireland too since last year.

So1invictus · 27/06/2023 10:50

I'm in the south of Italy and we are having the same conversation!
Shit, and very very expensive.

I priced them literally yesterday as it's 35 degrees and we usually have a fridge full...watermelon is €4 for a kilo piece, yellow ones are the cheapest, going at about €3,50 each but dry and tasteless inside. Canteloupe and Charentais both about €5 each.

At this time of year here, they'd usually be giving them away almost.

MayBeee · 27/06/2023 13:56

At least it's just not me that can't find a decent one . It's a shame as we used to eat a lot of them.

Well, they're delicious and cheap - €1.50 - in France!

Hey @FlibbedyFlobbedyFloo I just bought a honeydew melon from Tesco for £1.89 and it was ok but nothing special so can you send some tasty ones this way!

Also hope you are keeping safe, just watching all the chaos and violence in France at the moment, must be so scary.

Frenchfancy · 30/06/2023 18:24

Also in France, eating delicious melons every day.

Yes there are problems in France, but they are limited to a small number of areas, mostly the deprived areas of big cities.

It won't affect the melon harvest.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/06/2023 18:25

Phew!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 30/06/2023 18:30

Watermelon is my current safe food.

And the little Tesco Metro near my house has mini ones. They’re delicious.

OddBoots · 30/06/2023 18:34

We had an amazingly tasty galia melon from Farmfoods the other day, I was shocked at how lovely it was.

Oblomov23 · 30/06/2023 18:35

I have found this. And the watermelons have been totally tasteless this year aswell.

Riverlee · 30/06/2023 18:35

We saw some huge water melons in France.

I agree, they’ve shrunk.

JustDanceAddict · 30/06/2023 18:36

Agree, they were ok a couple of months ago but tasteless now 😞 particularly watermelon

CountingMareep · 30/06/2023 18:36

Well, some countries had really hot weather at the wrong time, then it rained non stop. I think southern Spain may be having a hard time with a lot of their produce.

also British supermarkets being cheapskate

IWishIWasABaller · 30/06/2023 18:38

You just have to know how to pick a good watermelon , large yellow sun spot and lots of scars / marks makes for a delicious one

LadyVictoriaSponge · 30/06/2023 18:38

All fresh fruit is just like eating crunchy water these days, I had some strawberries yesterday, tasteless.

khw666 · 30/06/2023 18:59

Oh I love it when British strawberries appear in the shops! Not forgetting raspberries too - these both taste lovely to me this year.

CCSS15 · 30/06/2023 19:06

I know!!! Have been having this exact conversation at our house - what is going on???

pippistrelle · 05/07/2023 07:12

Now in France and eating melons. They are delicious but more expensive than usual. Not £9.50 expensive though!

Ostryga · 05/07/2023 07:25

Do you have a Turkish market near you? Our sells HUGE watermelon wedges (enough to feed 10 people) for £4 and they are divine.

Supermarket melons are vile. Although I did get some nice pre-sliced cantaloupe in M&S the other day. But it was £6 for 8 bits. Daylight frigging robbery.

SerendipityJane · 05/07/2023 07:42

Imagine you sell your product by weight.

Imagine you discover that water is fucking heavy.

Imagine you can breed plants to produce very heavy fruits because they are full of water.

Where do you think you would be ?

User9753224 · 05/07/2023 08:02

I have a little watermelon to use today, trying to recreate Bill’s restaurant Santini Salad!

Will report back with the verdict on the melon as it’s always awesome when I’ve eaten at Bill’s

cuckyplunt · 05/07/2023 08:06

Just has a week gorging on delicious watermelon in Turkey. pay £5 a slice (effectively) in the UK.. sigh!
They must have a massive carbon footprint though, so maybe just as well that nobody wants to buy them in this country.
