Losing my mind with hayfever this year, anyone else?

I look like I've been crying, DH can't stop sneezing and three year old DS is congested, snotty and has today developed a congested cough - his eczema is also flaring up. The usual antihistamines seem to be doing nothing this year - I've had to give DS Ventolin for the first time this year as well.

Just looking for solidarity really, misery loves company an' all that!

Yep it's bad this year. I've been doubling up the tablets, Vaseline up the nose, eye drops, the lot. Still have a pink itchy face.

Embelline · 26/06/2023 17:12

Yep, usually the vaseline trick is a life saver, and I have some eye drops for it as well, but I still seem to be getting quite extreme symptoms.

Allevia, or unbranded Fexofentadine, take 2 a day. It's the bees knees, plus the Otrivine stuff for the eyes.

Fexofenadine plus you can use other antihistamines as well ,speak to the pharmacist. Beconase nasal spray plus eye drops. Shower before bed helps. It's brutal this year!

bingbangbongding · 26/06/2023 17:46

Yeah had to go to the doctors and get fexofenadine and beconase. Have had them before but haven't had them for a few years.

unlikelychump · 26/06/2023 17:47

Yes me too. I called in sick today because I've been so unwell.

emmylousings · 26/06/2023 17:50

DS has suffered a lot this year. Seriously, the best remedy for him is homemade nettle tea. Get some nettles (young looking and leaves from higher up), wash, rinse, put in pan with hot water for 5 mins. Maybe add a spoon of honey. Let it cool. Strain (fish out odd stray insects). He swears by it.

AnxiousShep · 26/06/2023 17:51

Yep. Not had it this bad in years.

Seas164 · 26/06/2023 17:57

It's nuts this year, I'm taking 2 X fenofexadine and 2 X loratidine a day plus eye drops every couple of hours and inhalers and yesterday I was sneezing constantly nonetheless. I look like an upset Rudolph and sound like an old accordion. It's a pain in the arse, you've definitely got company.

Embelline · 26/06/2023 20:26

@emmylousings I've never heard of that before, I'm not sure I'd be able to get him to drink it!

Both available at the pharmacy now which makes life much easier for everyone.

RoyKentFanclub · 26/06/2023 21:59

Ds has had the injection which seemed to see him through his a levels for a few weeks but he’s now really suffering. So he’s effectively got the protection from
the injection plus an antihistamine and he still can’t leave his bedroom. Even if he comes downstairs to the kitchen it sets him off where I’ve had a window open.

tootrueblue · 26/06/2023 22:00

If you suffer with your nose most of all, try a steroid nasal spray with fluticasone as the active ingredient - Boots do their own one. You can also take your antihistamine tablet alongside it. It's been brilliant for me this year

Octomingo · 06/07/2023 21:49

Hit me like a tonne of bricks last week. I take anti histamines from about Feb, thanks to tree pollen. I also use local honey and drink nettle tea so I've been feeling quite smug.
Then bam!

Contact lenses don't work properly; can't go running cos I can't breathe; can't sleep because I'm coughing all night. It's the cough that's the worst. It drives me mad when family members have a cough, so I also hate myself every time I cough.

Embelline · 08/07/2023 15:02

The cough is awful, I sound like a really heavy smoker!

StMarysTrainee · 08/07/2023 15:06

Nettle tea definitely! It gives complete respite for approx 20-30minutes. Might not sound like much, but you can drink it all day long. I actually found out about this at my GP nearly twenty years ago and am so glad I did as I tell as many people as I can.

StMarysTrainee · 08/07/2023 15:07

Oh and the bought nettle tea teabags aren’t bad, and you can try it iced in lemonade too for children.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/07/2023 15:10

I'm finding it very off-and-on this year. Most of the time it's not bad at all, but when it is, it is atrocious, and the usual treatments don't even touch it. Then it is gone again.

AnxiousBanxious · 08/07/2023 15:10

Me!!! What the hell is going on?

Off to get nettle tea! Thank you life savers

AnxiousBanxious · 08/07/2023 15:11

Mine is mostly itchy eyes and itchy inside of mouth. And giant sneezes leading to heavy nosebleeds

BeverlyHa · 08/07/2023 15:12

yup, it is crazy, I am on Ventolin and I have it as a constant right to have it, what they call it here, a permanent prescription or? and do not use it but right now, the last month have been having all my asthmatic childhood issue brought back to me

Kimii · 08/07/2023 15:13

Fexofenadine doesn’t touch the sides for many sufferers. It’s no better than over the counter cetirizine.

Embelline · 08/07/2023 20:53

Nothing is touching the sides for me at the moment. I'll have to try nettle tea. Would the tea bag variety work?

Yes, this is what I found (to my great disappointment Sad)

Octomingo · 09/07/2023 00:35

I've been drinking nettle tea for years. The tea bags from amazon. Even they haven't saved me this year. Fenoxedrine however, does seem to be. Although my cough still starts like clockwork at 9pm.
