Jobs in civil service/police with debts

Hi, I'm currently a stay at home mum thinking about future jobs and have always been interested in joining the prison or probation service or possibly control room with the police. I'm studying a degree with the ou which will be finished in two years.
My problem is I have quite a large amount of debt and a ccj, most of these are quite old from when I was with my ex partner, I am trying to maintain payments and improve my credit score but I'm worried this would cause a problem if I were to apply in one of these sectors. I'm hoping by the time I come to apply several of my debts will be cleared but will be gutted if I can't be considered due to bad financial decisions when I was younger. Many thanks

You’ll be able to join the police once your CCJ is discharged and you can demonstrate that your loan commitments are manageable. The CS - it will completely depend what sort of role you’re interested in and in which department. The vetting is stricter for senior and finance related roles.

Thank you for your reply, I'm interested in admin type roles in the police, and possibly probation in the civil service, I know the ccj may affect me in possible blackmail from criminals. It was issued in 2018 but still a fair amount owing until its paid off. I just wanted to check the impacts of the type of job I can go for, any debts I still have I'm paying back on time and not getting into further debt. Hopefully by the time I'm ready to apply this will go in my favour.

My DP just joined the prison service and they did credit check him. As long as you can show it is an old event and you are currently on top of your fiances I imagine it wouldn't be a massive issue?

The CCJ will fall off your report next year anyway?

Yea, six years until a CCJ no longer shows and the OP says that she has two more years of study Wink

Thank you, will keep up with the repayments on my existing debts and avoid taking on anything else over the next few years while I finish my studies. Hopefully by then my credit score will have improved and they will be able to see I'm managing my finances. Thanks for the comments.
