Where to meet professionals and business people in Manchester/London?

I am from a first-gen immigrant family. Thanks to our race, we are very isolated.
My parents forced me to study all the time so I never developed any friendships at uni or school.

How do I find some professionals or business people to network with in Ldn and Manchester?

I've tried a networking event, but it's pretty weird 'cos everyone is a stranger and I have no idea how to initiate the conversation after the event

Join the RSA and attend the networking events. They have thriving north west and London groups.

There is this one which is the next town over from where I live - it's free and I have a few friends who go!

Are you actually after networking with people in business or are you looking to make friends? Surely most people at networking events are looking to sell/make business? Maybe you'd better going a hobby group or meet up event?
