Hotels and pre authorisation - help?

This is a very boring, common sense type question so apologies in advance!

I booked a hotel for the end of this week through booking.com. It was non refundable (fine with this) and stated that the hotel would pre authorise my card for the full amount. Which they did the next day. I always thought pre authorisation was a temporary hold and it would reappear as available in a few days?

Anyway, the hotel stay is the end of this week and the money is still held. Does this mean I’ve effectively paid? Do I pay again on check in? Basically I’m trying to budget how much spending money I will have actually ‘available’ to me and whether I have to account for paying ‘twice’ if the pre authorisation is held and not used for payment.

I really hope that made sense!

If they have pre authorised for the room I would expect them to convert to payment when you check in. You shouldn’t have two charges for the one room. However, they may also pre authorise for incidentals such as meals.
