No party food or drink provided

So my ds(11) went to a football party yesterday. The minute we got in the car he asked to go the shop for a drink as he was so thirsty.
Party was at the local astro pitch, party room included that has 2 ovens, hob, 2 toasters, 2 microwaves and 2 fridges. Most parents bring in frozen pizzas and chips and cook them or order in pizzas.
Kids were running around for 2 hours in hot weather they were not offered any drinks during that time.
He said in the "party room" they got 1 small bottle of water (250ml) and a small slice of birthday cake. They only went into the room 10 minutes before I arrived to collect him.
When I went in the mother was packing up the cake which looked like there was about 3/4's left. I thought the kids must have had enough food that they didnt want cake. And parents cleaned up very quickly. Kids were all quiet(14 11/12 yr old boys) who are normally very loud at parties. Kids were just sitting waiting to be collected.Turns out they got a very very skinny slice, described by ds as thinner then a slice of bread.
Ended up bringing him to Mcdonalds as a treat and we seen 2 other parents of kids that were at the same party getting their kids food.

A 12-2pm birthday party definantly should include food, and drinks as well, and especially as it was a football party, so involved running around etc.

Fucks sake some of the responses on here 🙄
If invites were sent out for a party that was 12 till 2! then food and drink should have been provided. Christ this site sometimes 😂

Precisely. Sometimes I think I live in another dimension.

OP, it was very poor form of the hosts. I’d be pissed off with that.

Emanresu9 · 25/06/2023 18:06

my year 7 son would never dream of attending a football party without a water bottle.

If he forgot then he could stick his head under the tap in the loos

So the parents booked (and paid for) the astroturf pitch for 2 hours, and the kids spent almost all of this time playing football. That sounds like heaven for football-mad kids, who'd rather do that than anything else. Hopefully this was what the birthday boy chose to do with his friends.
Despite it being an extremely hot day, you took your DC to play football but didn't think to send him with a water bottle?
Surely at the age of 11/12 any child should feel able to organise getting some water from a tap or drinking fountain if they feel thirsty? isn't this what they do at school?! presumably there is free tap water available at this venue? Did he just not want to stop playing?

I don't understand all the PPS berating the organising parents for being 'cheap' because they didn't buy a bottle of squash. I don't buy squash for kids. I don't see what's wrong with tap water. Much better for their teeth. (some parents insist on brushing teeth immediately after any sugar is consumed - it doesn't sound like you sent your DC along with a toothbrush either!)

At a party venue, lots of kids won't think to interrupt the game to go off and find a cup from cupboards in a kitchen to get themselves water. And kids going off randomly to do this is likely to be disruptive / make a mess.

An adult finding some jugs, running the tap so it's cold and bringing water out for half time is much more sensible

Moonlightdust · 25/06/2023 18:08

YNBU. It was set over lunchtime on a hot day with the kids doing a sport activity - jugs of squash at the minimum should’ve been provided. A pack of frozen 3 x pizzas is pretty cheap. Some parties can be stingy with cake - I always give great big slabs but that’s just me! 😁

For people saying the kids should have brought theirnown water bottles......
Would you send your child to a birthday party in someones house with a water bottle?
Yes it was a hot day, it was a birthday party, its not that unusual to think drinks were to be provided.
Yes my ds brings his water bottle to school and football training but he is not been INVITED to these places by a friends parents to celebrate their childs birthday.

Yes, I would especially in this heat. Partly because I'd want them to be drinking water as well as whatever they were given at the party.

I always have a water bottle too, it's just habit now.

The rest is crazy though, who has a party over lunchtime and doesn't feed the kids! If money is tight they could have asked kids to bring a packed lunch.

Maybe they're competitive under eaters.

Draconis · 25/06/2023 18:10

That's pretty crap.
Parents could have spent £10 this make some sandwiches and get some crisps.

MissTwinklePaws · 25/06/2023 18:01

Bring your own waiter bottle to a party?😮

Do you go and play sport and not take water with you?

WombatChocolate · 25/06/2023 18:12

Yeah, but unusual. But not worth more than a second thought.

This is an example of a piddling little minor annoyance….best moved on from and forgotten….and teach the kids to do the same. Don’t mention it again to the kids or any other parents, because why make it into a bigger deal than a passing minor annoyance?

But this is the kind of thing some groups of parents will still be referring to 5 years later. ‘Remmeber when X hosted that party with no food…’.

Would you send your child to a birthday party in someones house with a water bottle?

But it wasn’t at someone’s house?

But its still a party

Gosh, a cake slice the thickness of a slice of bread is more than ample op!

Do you often overfeed your kids?

Personally I would have cut those slices in half.

Too much water is bad for you, 250ml sounds about right for a two hour exercise session.

YouNeverCanTellWithBees · 25/06/2023 18:13

Even Boris' non-parties had food 🤣

Maybe they couldn’t afford it but still wanted their kid to have a party?

Yeah and a bunch of presents for fuck all back

Oh do behave you sound joyless . A slab of cake and some water isn’t a dietary emergency

MissTwinklePaws · 25/06/2023 18:16

Do you go and play sport and not take water with you?

Probably not if it was a party, no. I'd expect there to be drinks available.

We’ve really hit a rich seam here OP!

You sound worse than the 'kids shouldn't eat too much cake' poster

Exactly. It's standard these days - play sport take a water bottle. Saves on plastic cups.

Kids shouldn't eat too much cake

User8907 · 25/06/2023 18:18

Sounds odd, especially if there was leftover cake so even if they didn't have money for other food, they could have given some more cake.

MissTwinklePaws · 25/06/2023 18:18

I feel like people just HAVE to argue about something on this site. How the fuck does anyone think it's normal to have no food and scarce amounts of drinks (water!) at a party. No way😭

darkmodeon · 25/06/2023 18:19

Zone2NorthLondon · 25/06/2023 18:02

Boom! There it is mn pithy judgement and food shaming applied when not necessary

There wasn't any shaming because they were fed a small portion of cake!
