Article on BBC News today reporting Rishi Sunak reassuring people to hold their nerve and get through high interest rates.

This is the man who paid £325,826 in capital gains tax and £120,604 in UK income tax on a total of £1.9m in the last tax year.

Of that £1.9m, £156,163 came from his parliamentary salary, £173,398 come from investment and savings income and about £1.641m from capital gains - profit made on the sale of assets.

How can a man with an income of £1.9m a year possibly understand what the average person is feeling right now?? Holding our nerve won't pay the mortgage this month.

Would lizz truss be the preferred option, or kier starmer?

We've tried Truss and that was pretty disastrous Grin

The current polling has 65% of all voters saying it is 'time for a change' - by which they mean a change of government - and this group includes 3 in 10 2019 Tory voters.

Nemesias · 04/08/2023 12:48

Anyone with the intelligence and moral fibre to be an excellent politician is off elsewhere being paid infinitely more than an MPs salary.

any suggestion of a pay rise for MPs is not acceptable to MN - the truth is though you have to offer decent pay to get candidates to want to do that job.

starmer had his nose in the human rights trough. Plus he was DPP. He has significant assets, he’s pretty wealthy, certainly in a different bracket altogether to you. No problem with that - personally I wouldn’t have paid him a penny for any of it but it’s all lawful earnings. But don’t pretend he’s any kind of man if the people.

Virtually every MP and PM has been completely out of touch with the reality of living as a normal individual for as long as I can remember, and I’m old.
They are nearly all over privileged, out for themselves and happy to lie when it suits.
i cannot see myself ever voting again, I’m totally disillusioned.

This is just not true.

How many MPs do you know personally?

I have met quite a number, and almost all were pretty ordinary.

The Tory voters will be wanting a change of leader (who they didn't vote for) rather than a change of party.

No, the 3 in 10 2019 Tory voters are the group that switched Lab to Con in that election, they are now switching back to Labour.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 04/08/2023 13:38

@calmcoco i actually know at least 15 MPs, only one of whom would I actually trust. Our MP is unfortunately the smuggest, elite and most ineffective one out of that lot. He’s been in post for as long as I can remember (over 25 years) so probably no likelihood of any changes. He’s only helpful if you’re equally wealthy or a public figure who can massage his ego imo.

Epicstorm · 04/08/2023 13:40

Sir Keir isn't short of money.

Not now, but he is from an ordinary background and has earned his own money. He knows how ‘ordinary people’ live.

Then I guess we know a different subset because the MPs I know and knew were from a range of backgrounds.

CreationNat1on · 04/08/2023 13:51

Isn't Sunak just a puppet for the IMF, who are issuing guidance that the UK needs to follow to avoid any international defaults.

Private school and worked exclusively in an elite profession. That's not an "ordinary person".

The only MP I'd trust is Tim Farron (Liberal, Kendal) who was for a very short time, the leader of the Libdems. Sadly, I don't live in his constituency (just a few miles over the constituency border but Kendal is our nearest town!) and we're stuck with an absent Tory MP (who no one ever sees) who replaced a Labour puppet (who was a chocolate fireguard) a couple of GE's ago. Tim Farron is very active locally and has been involved in numerous local campaigns. I've met him a couple of times and he comes across as very genuine and hard working. He had to resign as Libdem leader because "they, the woke brigade" didn't like his Christian beliefs so hounded him out. If he'd stayed as Libdem leader, I honestly think the Libdems would be a real force to be reckoned with rather than what they've become which is an irrelevance, so sad after how much popularity they'd gained up to the coalition and Clegg!

chopc · 04/08/2023 14:44

@Epicstorm and how is Sunak not from an ordinary background? He made his own money as well . Look up his bio

mibbelucieachwell · 04/08/2023 15:41

I find it disconcerting that people are impressed by Sunak's education. He has a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. I assume this gives him a third the level of knowledge of each of these subjects of someone who has done a degree in a single subject. Less than that fraction of the knowledge and understanding acquired by most graduates of Scottish universities and conservatoires - which typically offer four year degree courses.

And he has a masters in Business Administration: a fat lot of good that did him when he was chancellor, shlopping out a hastily botched pandemic compensation scheme which wasted huge amounts of taxpayers' money.

I'm sure you do indeed have to be at least fairly bright to work at a high level for Goldman Sachs. A willingness to work extremely long hours is also a prerequisite, all the while learning little about how most of the rest of the world operates, while you toil away, contributing almost nothing to society, in your bankers' bubble. And knowledge of banking is arguably nothing to be proud of. Look at the mess the banks got us into.

Yeah, can’t run a government like a business. It’s a different animal, he should have gotten a masters in public administration.

At the end of the day does it matter?

Osbourne had a degree in History and still became chancellor.

He got two fixed penalty notices recently. One for attending a lockdown party (and lying about it) and the other one was a seatbelt thing.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/apr/12/boris-johnson-and-rishi-sunak-fined-for-breaking-covid-lockdown-laws

Also, his wife claimed non-dom status for years while living in Downing Street. Non illegal, but morally dubious when married to a Government Minister.

"Rishi has played his advantages far better than silly Keir has. I’ve got far more time for that than pompous bloviating lefty fartarsing.
Play the hand you’re dealt well - Sunak certainly has."

Absolutely, Keir should have married a billionaire's daughter.

Im perfectly sure none of them would have him 😂

Not really, we seem to have a habit of repeatedly electing MPs on the same basis that the Americans elect high school homecoming kings and queens and then are surprised when they bumble around making a mess of things.

He went to a grammar school, it became fee paying while he was there and he got a bursary for sixth form. His first degree is from Leeds and his rise in the legal profession was meritocratic. How we hate ordinary people earning success in this country.

The grammar schools, that earlier labour governments and councils removed from disadvantaged parts of the country, confining them to places like leafy Reigate and people like Keir.
still not selling him to me I’m afraid
