Article on BBC News today reporting Rishi Sunak reassuring people to hold their nerve and get through high interest rates.

This is the man who paid £325,826 in capital gains tax and £120,604 in UK income tax on a total of £1.9m in the last tax year.

Of that £1.9m, £156,163 came from his parliamentary salary, £173,398 come from investment and savings income and about £1.641m from capital gains - profit made on the sale of assets.

How can a man with an income of £1.9m a year possibly understand what the average person is feeling right now?? Holding our nerve won't pay the mortgage this month.

There are a lot of people "in charge" who have no idea at all about ordinary people and how we live. Not just Tories, but the other political parties as well (Sir Keir isn't short of money) The trouble is - what can we, the ordinary people, ever do about it?

Sir Keir earns £150k and his wife works in the NHS. I get that it can look like a lot for someone outside of London but he lives in London zone 2 with 2 children and he also has poorer. siblings who he helps with their housing costs..he bought land for his parents to run their donkey sanctuary and he did not come from money which is probably why he still has a mortgage at his age and after a very successful legal career.

It certainly is not unlimited money. DH and I earn £120k combined, no kids, we own a modest 2 bed flat a couple of stops from where Keir lives. So probably the same level of disposable income considering we don't have kids (though we also have poorer relatives that we don't mind helping out).We don't have a car, my DH cycles to work, we are also concerned about mortgage interest rates (even if we can afford them). We shop at Aldi and we can't just buy anything we want, we budget too but not as closely as other people.

Rishi is on another planet, he upgraded the whole grid in Yorkshire so that he could have a swimming pool in his manor. He drinks out of a £200 WiFi enabled mug. He owns a flat in Kensington just for 'visiting family members' and also has a 5 bed house in Kensington. That flat in Kensington which was his bachelor pad in his Goldman days is probably double the value of my flat (£1 million mark) though we live in the same city...

Just remember if you paid the same proportion of your income in tax as Rishi then you would be significantly better off.

starmer had his nose in the human rights trough. Plus he was DPP. He has significant assets, he’s pretty wealthy, certainly in a different bracket altogether to you. No problem with that - personally I wouldn’t have paid him a penny for any of it but it’s all lawful earnings. But don’t pretend he’s any kind of man if the people.

The problem is how much money he has in the bank affects how he does his job.

He can afford high food, utilities and lending costs. He has wiggle in his budget.

The rest of us don't and are paying the prices for his decision making. Prices he can afford because he has money in the bank.

? Contrary to what you may believe, the PM has no decision making authority over inflation or interest rates or the price of cucumbers or Putin & his energy crisis creating war.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/08/2023 20:55

Of course he knows the economic reality of most people. He's not stupid or ill-informed. He's just brazening it out.

But is he responsible for the pot plants like his predecessor but one?

CrotchetyQuaver · 03/08/2023 21:19

But the wealth is not his background is it, I assume his family came here with very little if not nothing and his advantages in the form of the education they paid for (together wish scholarships I think so reduced fees) happened because sacrifices were made in other areas of the family budget. It may not have been poverty, but when you've had a childhood where every single penny counts, that stays with you for life.

AgathaSpencerGregson · 03/08/2023 21:28

Rishi has played his advantages far better than silly Keir has. I’ve got far more time for that than pompous bloviating lefty fartarsing.
Play the hand you’re dealt well - Sunak certainly has.

Don't get me started.

So because his parents immigrated here legally he’s not allowed to be against illegal migration?
you’re going to have to explain your working there. I’m not seeing it.

Mbop · 03/08/2023 22:07

@AgathaSpencerGregson I didn't explain myself or his comments very well.

He basically said the system is broken and needs overhauling, we need to reduce and control immigration, no mention of illegals, but when it was pointed out to him that he was the son of immigrants he back tracked and said how grateful he was that the system worked for him and his family.

Hopefully I've explained it a bit better. In a nutshell, in the same breath he contradicted himself.

"(Sir Keir isn't short of money) "

No he isn't. He has plenty of money that he earned. Is that a problem to you?

Rishi has earned his money too. Time to stop all this crap, criticize him for how he’s done his job not that he’s earned a lot of money in his time.

Don’t quote me on this, but I thought Jacob Rees-Mogg had been put in charge of the potted plants in the Tory party so they’d be his responsibility?

Rishi grew up in an ordinary family too. He has earned his money or it’s his wife’s.

So people who are descended from immigrants can’t argue for immigration control? Seriously? What the actual fuck?

Give RS a break! I heard today (on something like GMB) that he has gone on his 1st proper holiday in 4 years.

poor sod. 🙄

many haven’t had a holiday in 4 years, let alone a proper one🤬

fullbloom87 · 03/08/2023 22:39

He doesn't have a clue, none of them do.
He went to the local private school near me and his parents ran the local pharmacy. He is the last man we need right now as PM he hasn't a clue about the real world or real world problems.

LakeTiticaca · 03/08/2023 22:57

Do you think it's only Tory MPs/Prime ministers that take posh holidays?
They all piss in the same pot, no matter how much people insist that they don't

They really do

It was good enough for the president of Singapore ... She did move out eventually as it was logistically impossible to check everyone going in and out of her tower block. This is local authority housing in Singapore - flat in a tower block!

Some politicians can be humble and still do their jobs well. It's probably better to get someone with simple tastes. I mean we all remember the wallpaper debacle with Boris. Isn't it better to get a politician who isn't fussed about all that and can concentrate on running the country?

Moving out of Yishun: 6 things to know about President Halimah Yacob's jumbo flat

SINGAPORE - Madam Halimah Yacob's fondness for her Yishun home is well documented - but she will soon be moving out of her family home due to security concerns.  Read more at straitstimes.com.
