Stupid passport question

Really stupid. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

My passport was issued on 19.12.14, so it’s effective expiry date for EU travel purposes is 19.12.24 - right or wrong?

Yes, I know, I told you it was a stupid question. The UK Gov recommended validity checker wants me to put in the printed expiry date, but I’ve got an extra 9 months added to mine and that doesn’t count because it’s beyond the 10 year mark. And I am having a massive self-doubt moment 😳

What does the checker tell you if you put in the expiry date as printed?

It depends where in the world you are travelling too. So EU doesn't accept the added months...but you also need 3 months extra which can use the added months.

Isn't it 10 years from the issue date now, so the extension isn't valid.

Not a stupid question! Your passport needs to have been issued less than 10 years before your departure date, and be valid for three months after the final day of your holiday.

@PrincessMini tbh I navigated away from the page with an impatient eye roll when I saw that box - it has a note saying that for the EU you can only use it for 10 years after the issue date, my problem is that I had a late night last night and I want someone to confirm that I am correct that 2024 is in fact 10 years from the issue date 😳

Yes, the expiry for travelling within the EU is 19/12/24 as it is 10 years from the issue date.

You need 3 months remaining on the passport when leaving the EU and thats when you can go by the actual expiry date.

Right, it’s 10 years from the issue date so that’s December 2024, right? 😳

You’re right, and the passport also has to have 3 months to it’s printed expiry on the date you intend to return from the EU. Simon Calder has the answers.

Awesome, so I’m good to use it this year! Basically I grabbed it, read the printed date, thought ‘great, valid for this trip’, read about the 10 year thing, went back upstairs, looked at the issue date, miscalculated that as expiring this December (ahem late night), then looked again and realised but am now crushed with self-doubt 😂

Try the passport checker. It should pick up the issue with the dates anyway.

It's only EU travel that's affected by the 10 year rule and other countries will have different rules e.g. can use until printed expiry and/or need 6 months remaining

Then I think I’ll bet renew it next year because frankly I clearly can’t cope with the high octane calculations required here 🤓😵‍💫😂

Solidarity OP. I am going on holiday on Wednesday and keep checking the passports in a panic. They haven’t changed so far…

I'd renew in the latter part of next year then. Your new passport will be blue and only be valid for 10 years so you'll not need to do any calculations to work out if you can travel
