Just that really. What song do you want to be remembered/known for?

Don’t forget me when I’m gone - a song by Canadian/Scottish band Glass Tiger. It’s a bit sort of Simple Mindsy/U 2 esque soft rock from the mid 80s. Brian Adams featured too. One of my favourite songs and reminds me of my early 20s living in Canada as a Nanny.

Don’t You Forget About Me - Simple Minds

As a Christian, I will be having a church funeral, which means traditional hymns, not pop songs.
I have chosen:
“The Day Thou Gavest, Lord is Ended”, “Just as I am, without one plea” and
“In Heavenly Love Abiding”.
That last one ends with the line “My saviour has my treasure, and he will
walk with me.”
My treasure is my lovely husband, who died young, 31 years ago, and my dearest wish is to see him again and walk with him in heaven.

Oh how lovely and yes, you will.

I've been thinking about this lately as FIL died recently and we spent time deciding on the music.

I'm having this We walked down the isle to this when we got married

@Fartooold FIL's last song was Wonderful World. They played it twice and I swear half the congregation were singing along as we left the building.

Do they play music and songs in funerals in the Uk? Wow, I thought it was just a religious thing... at least it is just a religious things where I come from with strict protocol and there is no space for songs! I am Christian orthodox by the way!

Song to Say Goodbye - Placebo

But in reality, I quite like

A funeral service at a crematorium can be whatever you want it to be .

What lovely choices. And I’m sure you will be reunited with your husband.

I have also requested a traditional Christian funeral with hymns that will include Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art. But I still want Don’t You Forget About Me as people are leaving.

I don’t want a funeral. Not sure if that’s possible? Maybe they won’t be a thing in future… (unless I die sooner).

You don't have to have a funeral.

You can have a direct cremation I think it is called.

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 23/06/2023 16:41

I organised a funeral (my job) for a guy whose surname was Trotter. He'd had a lot of Del Boy jokes over the years so they had the Only Fools And Horses theme as the recessional music. Was brilliant and made everyone laugh and smile.

A friend of mine died young from cancer and she had Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life for the recessional piece, which too made everyone smile. I love the idea of going out to a fun bit of music to lighten the mood.

They will always be a thing. They’re for the living and the majority of people find comfort in celebrating their loved one’s life and showing their respect.

Bluebells1970 · 23/06/2023 16:42

I've told my DC that I want a direct cremation, but that they can put my ashes into a firework and blast it into the sky to A sky full of stars by Coldplay. It's my happy song.

I can't bear funerals with dirgeful sad tunes. I want to celebrate the fact that I was here and I existed.

elliejjtiny · 23/06/2023 16:42

Time of our lives by Tyrone Wells. It's slushy but I love it.

Iamclearlyamug · 23/06/2023 16:42

Angels and Airwaves - The Adventure. Very little known but one of my favourite songs of all time

White Horses - Jacky Kay - the theme song from a lovely TV programme about the Lipizzana stud when I was a little girl. Galloping on my white horse was a childhood dream I have been lucky enough to make true. Sorry DH & kids, its my beautiful ponies that will take my soul away Grin

Also Bright Side of the Road by Van Morrison as everyone leaves - a good cheery send off.

Funnily enough I've just been thinking about my choices but now I want to add White Horses which always reminds me of the start of the summer holidays and long, bright nights of my Highland childhood. Beautiful song!

My other choices are, for the reflective bit, the Eriskay Love Lilt ('Sad am I without you') and for the end, Morningtown Ride by The Seekers with which my long-lost Mum would sing me to sleep.

My mum wants a direct cremation. You still have a coffin but get taken direct to the crem, usually in a private ambulance rather than hearse, and no one attends. The coffin still goes in via the chapel and as funeral directors we always have the crem play a bit of gentle music so they don't go off is silence.
