Car advice - like a Yaris Hybrid but a bit bigger and safer!

I love my 2018 Yaris hybrid but with 3 Dc and regular motorway/dual carriageway driving to work circumstances have changed since I got it (separation) and now it’s the only car I have access to I think I need something a little bit bigger, with a little more power, more comfortable and being higher up/more substantial would make me feel safer on the motorway.

Is there a hybrid (not plug in) that’s similar but a little bigger? Boot has to be easy to lift things in and out of and seats easy to put down (outing hobby meaninfni need to transport a large thing! Although Yaris is small it’s a low boot and can easily put down seats and lift in my thing).

I did like the look of the Skoda yeti but obviously not hybrid.

any recommendations appreciated! Reliability and low servicing costs also needed

Good grief - what’s your hobby that you’re the only person in the UK who does it?!?

I love my Yaris hybrid and have certainly never felt unsafe in it so that bemused me a bit but I can see you might want something bigger. What’s the next Toyota up? - does that not appeal if you like the make generally?

Wallabyone · 22/06/2023 12:36

I drive the same car as you, went from a big 4 x 4 to this as the child re have got a big bigger (also have three). Have you looked at the Yaris cross? It's a bit bigger and more substantial, and definitely cooler than a regular Yaris 😂

And sorry I looked for a cars topic but couldn’t see one!

Having seen a pretty much intact Yaris post crash and roll, from which the occupants could walk away, I'd say it was as safe as a car can be.

I think the next size up is an Auris.

I have a Yaris, but an Auris is a nice car. Not sure if they do a hybrid version though.

Deadringer · 22/06/2023 13:49

I have the Auris, it's a bit bigger. If you are buying new the Corolla is quite a bit bigger and comfier.

EvenmoreDisorganised · 22/06/2023 13:58

I regularly drive a Yaris hybrid on motorways and have never felt unsafe but if I did I would get along to a Toyota dealership where you can see all the others and sit in them etc. I'm a big fan of Toyotas for both economy and reliability.

I do love the ease of parking it, and I only have one Dc on a booster seat now and no buggies or anything so in a sense they take up less space but it’s things like holidays where I feel I need a bit more room.

the safety aspect… I just feel there are so many higher up vehicles on the road, if we were to be in a collision in the Yaris I’d feel vulnerable I think

hmmm maybe I should stick with it a bit longer.

Is yours a Yaris or a Yaris Cross?

If just a standard Yaris, maybe the Cross is what you need?

you need to look at cars categorised as “small SUV”.

We just got one. It is similar in driving position height and space to our Seat Arona (which also a Small SUB but was not a hybrid). I’m very pleased with it.

HelpMeGetThrough · 22/06/2023 14:08

I've got the Corolla Hybrid and really like it. Good boot space (have transported a roomful to and from University) and goes well if you put it in Normal mode on the motorway.

I'm regularly getting 58 mpg on the motorway at a steady 75 to 80.

Around town it's in EV mode a fair bit. I put £25 of petrol in about 2 weeks ago and the needle has hardly moved in that time.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 22/06/2023 14:26

What’s your budget? If you want safety, I’d suggest a Volvo XC40

Kazzyhoward · 22/06/2023 14:29

If it's safety you're after, have a look at the Volvos, the small one is the XC40 and the mid size one is the XC60. Very solid, safe and reliable.

Usernamenotavailab · 22/06/2023 14:32

Hyundai kona, or the new Bayon?

User63847484848 · 22/06/2023 15:19

Thanks all
it is just a standard Yaris, not a cross

It’s like Toyota read your post and created a car for you 😀
