Why have the Tories voted down this bill which was in their manifesto? Can they be trusted with anything? They’ll say anything for votes and then renege.

MPs vote down Labour attempt to revive animal welfare bill

Motion to bring back legislation on puppy smuggling and live exports that was part of Tory manifesto rejected in Commons

Because they hate all living creatures and think their voters are thick (which they'd have to be to ever vote for them again)

This is particularly depressing as I remember some discussions on some vegan etc FB sites where people were saying how they love animals so much that this is what’s going to sway them. Why do people still give them the benefit of the doubt. If they’ve been callous with others, of course they’ll be about animals as well. I despair. I mean, it might be some clever political thing that I don’t get and that’s why it’s not going through but FFS.

Because policies that don't directly impact their, or their rich mates, pockets are less important than getting one up on the opposition.

According to that second Guardian article, it was literally the Tories' own bill, unchanged, that Labour reintroduced... and Tories voted down.

LadyWithLapdog · 22/06/2023 12:16

I know! So they introduced it to get the vegan/animal lover/undecided/other fools votes and then they turned it down. Why? Is it some tedious bureaucratic thing or just the usual thing to be expected from the nasty party.

Ah, the keeping of hunting dogs… For fox hunting?

Remember this when they talk about protecting women.

Veggies, yes. The ‘friends with the devil’ approach is problematic.

I mean ‘befriending the devil till you cross the bridge’, I’ll try and find an equivalent saying.

Ah but the first article has Tories saying that, although the Tories did this, it's all Labour's fault.

Another very familiar refrain...

LadyWithLapdog · 22/06/2023 12:54

Yes, the Tories blaming Labour for the Tories voting against the bill the Tories promised to introduce. Then accusing Labour of playing politics. If this isn’t gaslighting , I don’t know what is. It’s insane.
