@barbarahunter  Edward Woodward was a lovely singer too, I have about four of his LPs. You can't buy them anymore, or ask for them on Spotify, one of the reasons I distrust digital media. (Des O'Connor is another one where you can't seem to access his output digitally. He made SO MANY LPs and now you can only hear about five individual songs digitally. And for some reason they seem to have picked the absolute worst ones))

@AnxiousShep I realised a couple of minutes afterwards. 😀How soon we forget.

Rick Astley
Anneka Rice

I think Rick Astley is still pretty well known. He's been doing a fairly big tour recently anda lso supported Take That about 3 or 4 years ago. My DCs knew who he was from his most famous song, think it's featured on TikTok etc fairly reguarly.

Cilla Black. Everywhere when I was a kid.

I remember my daughters watching her on "Blind Date" and "Surprise, Surprise" when they were little, and running to me one day, shrieking "Mummy! Did you know Cilla Black used to be a singer?!

I'm guessing you knew her more for BD and SS than "Anyone Who had a Heart" and "Step Inside, Love" too Smile

GettingStuffed · 22/06/2023 20:06

Buster Bloodvessel .
according to my grandson Green Day.

OneFrenchEgg · 22/06/2023 20:11

@LaMarschallin yes my mum used to see her at The Cavern, told me all about Cilla's singing. Think it was Surprise Surprise and she sang at the end? Then Blind Date later. I thought she was amazing 😂

@AnxiousShep I am extremely embarrassed to admit that I own the 45 of "I could be so good for you"...I clearly wasn't even remotely one of the cool kids back in the day.

I'm struck that some of these names were in their heyday before I was born but I've still heard of them and seen their work. (Eg Dick Emery was really before my time for example but still a familiar cultural reference when I was growing up.) We're listing people on here that are probably similarly out of date and assuming young people haven't heard of them, and I think they probably haven't. Is it because more people are famous for less now, and therefore their fame is more transitory?

Yes I remember loads of entertainers but also people at school etc sticking a cup in the mouth and saying "sitting at my piano" - Jimmy Durante years after his heyday. He died in 1980 aged 86.

tobee · 22/06/2023 20:48

I give you Ruby Flipper. But to be fair, I hardly remember them myself. Wink

Miming sipping coffee to "clouds in my coffee" in You're So Vain being a case in point.

Lena Zaveronni died from an eating disorder
