Neighbour will not give me my parcel

AlwaysTheGoodGirl · 21/06/2023 23:13

I've had a parcel sent to my mum's house and it's gone to the neighbour. My mum sometimes can't get to the door in time and the delivery guy has logically taken it elsewhere to deliver it. To cut a long story short, this neighbour is horrible and has threatened and shouted at my mum in the past, and is not reasonable to deal with at all. I've tried knocking on the neighbour's door every day since Sunday and she is not answering. How do I get round this?! I feel like I don't want to keep trying and 'annoying' this neighbour as I don't want my mum to have to deal with any more hassle, but she can't just keep my stuff! Any suggestions welcome.

If your mum regularly can’t get to the door in time, a lockbox might be an idea. But also don’t get your stuff delivered there!

We have one of these - very prominent next to the door - and I'd say only about 5% of people ever use it. They usually just leave parcels on the doorstep, or occasionally take them to a neighbour (thankfully, our neighbours are lovely, so no issues there).

I wonder every time why they just ignored the lock box, but I'm guessing they might worry that people won't check it regularly and/or claim that it hasn't been delivered - and then they (the deliverer) gets the blame; whereas if they leave it where you have to fall over it next time you leave the house, and have a photo of where they stuck it, they maybe feel less likely to get it in the neck.

We have a storage box we use and delivery people have no problem using it. We've changed the online delivery preferences for most delivery companies to tell them to use the box also.

There is a lock but we rarely use it. Low crime area and covered by doorbell camera anyway.

I often get photos of deliveries in the box to show they've delivered it.

Far better than when they used to chuck things over the side gate 🤣

This! I read all your posts expecting you to say she was in but nothing you've posted actually suggests she's definitely been at home when you've knocked?

Yup. Totally absurd discussion on here. Drop a note with your number and ask when you can retrieve the item.

Ah, OK - do they like you to register it with them, then? I'll have to look into that.

I'd assumed it was just common sense; just like we've never had to register our letterbox with the pizza firms and other purveyors of junk mail - they've always managed to find it without prompting Grin

fuck it id name and shame them on social media with the photo of them accepting the delivery

Why??

The women might not have even been at home when the OP knocked and yet you and a few others are advocating publicly shaming her?

Honestly just post a note through with your number and let her contact you. This is the most sensible way to resolve the issue.

HerMammy · 22/06/2023 08:23

The responses on here are ridiculous, police etc. Note through door, ask postie to retrieve.

Did you read the thread- there is a photo of her receiving it and she wont answer the door to the op:

Just to add insult to injury, I've got the Royal Mail tracking number which shows this woman's surname, with a photo of her in her doorway receiving the parcel in her shorty pyjamas with her knee pointed out in a fancy pose.....

Of course I read the bloody thread. I meant not at home when the OP knocked for the parcel. Nothing she's posted indicates she was definitely at home at the time of the OP knocking. Yet people want to publicly shame her just because she's not dropped the parcel round in 3 days.

This is not true.

It is true. The seller hasn’t fulfilled their side of the contract by delivering it to where OP requested. If OP had said to leave with a neighbour then that would be different.

The onus is on the seller to either send the item again or refund the customer. And they have to take it up with the delivery company to be compensated for their loss.

As others have mentioned OP, contact Amazon’s customer service directly and they will intervene. They’re normally really good.

magnolia1997 · 22/06/2023 08:37

Amazon always sort out any problems really quickly via the chat function.
Not sure if it's different if bought from an Amazon seller.

unbelieveable22 · 22/06/2023 08:48

@AlwaysTheGoodGirl you ordered something to be delivered to your Mum knowing she may not be able to get to the door on time? You would then have been aware there was a possibility it would be delivered to your Mum's neighbour and there could be difficulties.
I feel sorry for the seller who may be a small business.

MagicBullet · 22/06/2023 09:23

Mamaneedsadrink · 22/06/2023 01:15

This. Why do they give it to the neighbour??

Because that’s the normal way of doing dealing with someone not present when delivering a parcel?
it has been the case for years and years.

And many people are actually very grateful to get their parcel that way rather than having to treck to the post Office Depot or wait for another delivery date etc….

MagicBullet · 22/06/2023 09:24

@AlwaysTheGoodGirl not going to help now but your mum might want to put a note on her door saying she can be slow to answer the door - please wait a bit longer than usual so people know she is there.

I found delivery drivers really good for that (I have mobility issues too)

Jibo · 22/06/2023 00:28

Would the police help? Not 999 obviously but the community police? Technically it is theft.

That was my thought.

Soapyspuds · 22/06/2023 09:28

Take it up with ebay as an item not delivered. Keep the bit of card that royal mail left as evidence.

Your contract is with the seller
The sellers contract is with royal mail

Maybe leave bad feedback if they will not deal with this.

Yes in your shoes (Birkenstocks!) I would've got it delivered to me and taken it round to Mum's. But it's a lesson learnt.

GoodChat · 22/06/2023 09:31

Just put a note through the door.

It'll be in their terms that they'll deliver to a neighbour.

WoolyMammoth55 · 22/06/2023 09:32

Hi OP, in your shoes I'd:

  1. wait until evening when a light is on to ensure you know neighbour is home
  2. go over and knock and ring without stopping until she comes to the door
  3. have the delivery photo on your phone ready to show her and say that this is proof she has your parcel and you'll be onto community police to report theft if she doesn't give it to you.
Hopefully that works? If not then follow through with reporting the theft!

Then going forward, add delivery instructions to every package:

  1. wait longer as recipient needs extra time to get to the door
  2. if no answer leave in safe place on property
  3. DO NOT EVER deliver to evil neighbour

That way if she does get anything in future it's clearly the fault of the delivery company and you'd be in a stronger position to get compensation.

I do think that the seller is in the wrong as things stand not to offer a replacement, but I think if you make genuine efforts to retrieve it - including contacting the police - then they'd be more likely to help you out.

Best of luck!

Gh12345 · 22/06/2023 06:47

Op this is the guidance from RM:
I've received a card saying mail has been left with a neighbourIf you’re out when we try to deliver we might leave your delivery with a neighbour. We'll leave a red card and in some cases tell you which neighbour, including their name and house number This is instead of the item being returned to your local Customer Service Point. You can opt out of having your mail delivered to your neighbour here.

I don’t really think it’s fair to blame the seller and ask for compensation. Leave a note on the neighbours door

But the seller can claim compensation from RM the item receiver can’t. The seller has a duty to supply goods paid for to the purchaser not just any Tom, Dick or Harry.

@AlwaysTheGoodGirl
this may help. Basically if third party seller doesn't try to resolve situation in 2 working days you may be able to file an A-Z claim to get your money back. I hope you get this resolved quickly.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 22/06/2023 09:36

I tend to find that most delivery drivers are unwilling to wait more than a couple of seconds before they just dump it and go. Royal Mail tend to be a bit better, but you don't know who Amazon will use (if not their own deliverers) until your order is confirmed.

However young, fit and healthy you are, unless you permanently stand on sentry duty behind your front door at all times, there's a high probability that the delivery person will be gone by the time you're there.

I think the culture has largely changed, really, in that delivery drivers now knock or ring your bell as a way of alerting you that your parcel is waiting for you outside your door, rather than expecting to actually hand it over to you in person. If they do have more time to deal with the delivery (and they're under huge time pressures already), they will often spend that time searching for an illogical hiding place, where you won't find it for ages, rather than on waiting to hand it to you.

MaggieFS · 22/06/2023 09:37

It may not help with this parcel, but phone your mum's local sorting office and explain she takes a while to come to the door, and that nothing must ever be left with xx neighbour. Regular posties are often very good about this sort of thing (holiday cover less aware, obviously).

As for this one- you'll have to persevere with the seller ☹️

Imissingrid · 22/06/2023 09:37

Call Amazon customer service. It takes a bit of searching but is there. They will arrange a refund.
