Copper coil - 3 months in

CoilQuestion12 · 21/06/2023 23:04

I'd read lots about periods being heavier on the copper coil and apart from the first one (which wasn't even that bad), it's not been the case for me so I was quite pleased.

But!... I find that there are only about 10 days a month where I'm not dealing with either pre-period spotting, period bleeding, post period spotting, or ridiculous amounts of mucus (around ovulation). The spotting is only light pre and post period but it goes on for daaaays so I still need to use protection.

It's a bit ridiculous! Is it still because it's early days or is it likely to stay like this? If so, I think I may have to reconsider.

Also, my mental health is so up and down (very depressed around ovulation, anxious before periods), I'm starting to think I needed the hormones from the pill to keep me on an even keel! If so I might as well change to Mirena and bypass periods altogether.

This is exactly my experience aswell!! Except my periods are extremely heavy and wipe me out. I think it can take 6-9 months to fully settle so I'm giving it a while longer as Ive only had it in for 3 months too.

The mucus around ovulation is ridiculous!! 😞

I’m 5 and 1/2 months into having the mirena coil and still having bleeding issues . I’ve had about 3 weeks in total with no issues .

I’ve come this far so I’m tying to make it another few weeks and see if it settles

CoilQuestion12 · 21/06/2023 23:15

@Th1sisnotadrill thank you it's good to know it's not just me, though I'm sorry you have this too. I can't imagine if your periods are heavy on top of it, it must be annoying.

But yes you're right, I seem to remember them saying it can take 6+ months to settle so I am probably getting way too impatient.

I'm trying to cut down on waste too so I invested in period pants but I'm now having to wear the bloody things pretty much every day! The mucus is ridiculous, not even sure it's just around ovulation at this point, it seems constant!

Oh no @ScoobyBooby I thought Mirena was meant to be better on the bleeding front

I guess there is no magic solution then 😔

I think my body needs the two hormones. I was on the combined pill for years with no issues then suddenly started getting migraines so now the GP won’t prescribe it !

What pill was you on beforehand ?

Justchooseone · 22/06/2023 06:57

It definitely needs a few months to settle down. I’ve had two copper ones and the second one it took a few months, although I did have recurrent BV even after that, which is a known thing with copper coils.

I will say if it’s not settles after 6 months push to get it looked at. I had scans and smears and all sorts with my first one as I was just bleeding all the time. It did eventually settle after about two years, but when I got it taken out to TTC one of the ‘arms’ had broken off inside me!! They said they didn’t know for sure whether that had caused it but it can’t have helped!

It didn’t put me off as I was desperate for non hormonal contraception, and this one is much better.

CoilQuestion12 · 22/06/2023 07:12

@ScoobyBooby I was on microgynon, then nothing for about 4 years while I had my 2 DC.

Weirdly I have started having migraines the last few months, so not due to the pill.

@Justchooseone I'm impressed you weren't put off! I will give it another 3 months and see how it goes!

I hadn't had a period for so long (pregnancies and breastfeeding) so it seems like a lot, having to worry about protection 20 days of the month after a few carefree years!

@CoilQuestion12 I've just had my mirena replaced after 6yrs, I had a bit of spotting when the 1st one was fitted but nothing since then. I know not everyone gets on with it, but been a game changer for me. I originally had a copper coil, but couldn't cope with the bleeding and the mucus
