Is Ultrasun SPF the best?

bombemma · 21/06/2023 21:39

So off on our first abroad holiday since pre covid.

Is this still the best, 3 litttle ones, 2 of them ginger with translucent skin.

Always used Ultrasun, it certainly wasn't without fault but seemed the best back then

I use ultrasun and love it

bombemma · 23/06/2023 11:51

Any other comments before I take the plunge?

Very pale, sensitive skin here, prone to prickly heat, allergies etc and ultrasun is perfect for me.

I'm very pale and burn easily. I use Ultrasun and P20.

madeinmanc · 23/06/2023 13:00

I use Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced Baby in the Shade Sun Lotion SPF50+ (not the very similar-looking children's one, it has to be this exact one labelled "Baby in the Shade"). It's very good but does give your skin a white cast, I don't mind at all because it works and that's the most important thing but some people object to the look.

Otherwise, speaking as someone who burns but does water sports, you can't beat a UV rash vest, really. And a hat where practical.

Randomuser9876 · 23/06/2023 13:01

I have super sensitive skin and love ultrasun

GayPareeee · 23/06/2023 13:02

I have the ultrasun tinted face spf50 and burnt after 3 hours in the sun last weekend, I tan fairly easily.

I have just had a melanoma removed and the cancer nurse recommends La Roche Posay and altruist to everyone - but I'm buying gallons of the aerosol SPF50 from garnier as it's the only stuff my teens will use (and revitalist clinical spf50 on face) as they all hate the feeling of sun cream

madeinmanc · 23/06/2023 13:04

Oh, I've just remembered, sometimes if I don't want the "white face" from Ambre Solaire Baby in the Shade, I use a different sunscreen generally and then just apply the Ambre Solaire on my nose and cheeks, a bit like a cricketer, so I look less weird!

stevalnamechanger · 23/06/2023 13:07

I'd cover them in long sleeve rash tops and leggings and hats

Altruist sunscreen is brill

Nothing "once a day" is really effective when in and out the water

How much did you apply? The correct dose of 1.25ml is a lot

Aerosol spf is crap due to full of propellants - you think you're applying a lot and you're not . I'd avoid

( had so many skin issues and been to countless derms !)

SnackyOnassis · 23/06/2023 13:08

We use Ultrasun 50+ and it's brilliant - for me it's the tackiest formula so it doesn't run into their eyes when they get sweaty like some other creamier/lotion-y sunscreens do. Ultrasun just STICKS.

FalseEyelashesCheapLipstick · 23/06/2023 13:12

Me and DH burnt in random patches with ultrasun, DD was fine with it. We use soltan now and all are fine.

CMOTDibbler · 23/06/2023 13:37

I'd do p20 as a base as it lasts all day and it is much easier to do one really good application first thing, and then you can always spray over it later with whatever you prefer - I currently like the Boots cool and clear spf 50. And long sleeved rash vest and leggings.

HappiDaze · 23/06/2023 13:42

This year I've bought a selection of Soltan, Garnier, P20 and Lidl. All are 30 spf.

P20 will be for the start of our beach holiday followed after a few days by Garnier to put on face and Soltan to put on body.

The Lidl one is for DD to take out and about here.

HappiDaze · 23/06/2023 13:44

I've been using ultrasun for face but it keeps giving me spots. I'll use it up on holiday where the sea and pool will wash it off but I need something better for my temperamental face

adagio · 23/06/2023 13:46

I really like altruist - much nicer texture than many (not so greasy) and available in sainsbury - last year I’m sure it was an online only from feel unique etc so good to see it’s gone mainstream.

I use French pharmacy (whatever on offer from la Roche possay or Vichy or caudalie) on my face though.

HedyPrism · 23/06/2023 13:46

I'm a fan of Lidl own brand, Cien. I have burned using ultrasun. Also, cien doesn't give me eczema, which I'm prone to.

NotAMug · 23/06/2023 13:48

Personally I think ultrasun is the best stuff I have used. P20 stains clothes and it gives me hear rash. The boots all day stuff is really good too, they also have a water play version.

The key to the all day ones is to ensure you follow the instructions properly.

I never use sun cream on my face, I am allergic to almost all of them. I buy a decent moisturiser or tinted moisturiser that has an SPF in, often use a foundation that has SPF in also. My face still tans but it's really protected.

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 23/06/2023 13:50

I have eczema, allergies and sun sensitivity due to immunosuppressants. Ultrasun wins hands down over everything else I've tried. Protects to the extent I can actually be out in the sun (whereas I burn with other brand's SPF 30), easy to apply and rub in and doesn't run clothes. Absolute win (apart from the price of course)

Paddingtonthebear · 23/06/2023 13:53

Altruist face fluid is excellent

HappiDaze · 23/06/2023 13:55

@NotAMug to be fair I don't usually wear spf on my face because I don't get on with it and just use my No 7 Hydraluminous foundation, or whatever foundation I'm using with spf but where it's been so hot I decided to use my ultrasun face in place of foundation for walks.

Moisturiser with spf makes me burn but I'm ok with foundation with spf.

madeinmanc · 23/06/2023 14:05

I think people who can go out with just tinted moisturiser are in a different group to us "burners", tbf.

No it's an SPF 50 so fine if you burn. Obv it's not an all day one so does need to be applied.
