Is Ultrasun SPF the best?

So off on our first abroad holiday since pre covid.

Is this still the best, 3 litttle ones, 2 of them ginger with translucent skin.

Always used Ultrasun, it certainly wasn't without fault but seemed the best back then

Whole family of gingers here and we use altruist factor 50. Never had any issues and I anxiety love it. Not greasy, no shell and sinks in beautifully.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 23/06/2023 18:08

Ultrasun for very sensitive skin DD15. I like the face tint too.

DS will only use sunsense which works brilliantly.

Don't use altruist. Absolutely awful. Made my excema on my face so much worse, really itchy and came up in spots.

If I don't use Ultrasun on my face I use cerave spf50.

Foundation with spf is useless as you won't apply enough to get the stated coverage

Watch the Wayne Goss video

For the face you need to use 1.25ml which is a LOT of foundation, to get the stated spf value .

Any form of tan = sun damage do remember that

I always use Ultrasun and have done for many years.
We have used it across the world, in hot dry climates as well as hot humid ones. We started using when dd was small (she is now 21y) and she was reacting to many other suncreams.

We've never had any issues with it, have never burnt using it and it always lasts the day. We only top us if we've had to get towel dried so been rubbing at skin - which isn't often tbh as, if just in pool, we tend to dry in the sun.

It's expensive but lasts and it works.

With little children though I'd always go for a UV suit - separates if possible as easier to go to the toilet, etc. And then suncream in any exposed bits.

I think people who can go out with just tinted moisturiser are in a different group to us "burners", tbf.

I use the Ultrasun face suncream which is also tinted. So it's primarily a 50 SPF suncream but with the bonus of also being a tinted face base.

We have also used P20 - dh likes the oil version. They have changed the formula and it doesn't stain clothes as much these days we find. And it now comes in other SPFs than 20. However, dd and I prefer Ultrasun.

Dd is currently in the US for the summer and has taken bottles of it - various types inc tan activating, tinted face, glitter, and more.

Thanks, this is all so interesting to me as had been considering Ultrasun. How is it with staining though? Have just had lots of lovely holiday clothes ruined with staining from La Roche Posay and desperately looking for something that protects but does not stain….

Barelyable · 23/06/2023 21:50

@Katy75 no staining here...have used P20 for years but moved to ultrasun for that very reason.

Qilin · 24/06/2023 00:09

Not had staining with Ultrasun but we do follow the guidance to apply 30 minutes (or something like that) before going out - and usually do that before getting dressed, so it's had chance to sink it and start to bond.

Katy75 · 24/06/2023 08:02

Thanks very much, I will give it a go!

bombemma · 25/06/2023 02:43

We'll that's decision made, thank you.

Ok for further decision.

Is there a significant difference between 30 and 50?

My autistic DC really struggles with the cream and have these past through British summers been managing wonderfully with the sports gel. It disappears on touch do no need for rubbing. Only comes in a SPF30

I think that SPF 30 filters out 93% of the uv and 50 97/98% so I would say unless v fair/red heads and your diligent about reapplying that 30 should be enough

No. It's 97% v. 98%. So very little difference, and the 30 creams tend to be lighter, so we stick with those. We are blue eyed blond fair, but European fair, rather than Celtic fair, so more sun resistant though.

If your face still tans with it, how is it really protected? It might be getting less sun damage than if you weren't using anything at all, but it's still getting some, or you wouldn't be getting the tan.

It's virtually impossible for me to not tan at all unless I am covered by a hat/in the shade. I meant I never burn. I sit in the sun as I like sunbathing. I use suncream to stop burning. I would tan with the best F50 there is.

I really love Ultrasun and trust it implicitly with my very pale child, but texture wise it’s not great. It remains tacky on the skin and never really sinks in. My son doesn’t tolerate it well so I use a different sun cream and apply it more often to make up for the fact I don’t quite trust it.

The sports gel is what you need
