Is Ultrasun SPF the best?

bombemma · 21/06/2023 21:39

So off on our first abroad holiday since pre covid.

Is this still the best, 3 litttle ones, 2 of them ginger with translucent skin.

Always used Ultrasun, it certainly wasn't without fault but seemed the best back then

@NotAMug to be fair I don't usually wear spf on my face because I don't get on with it and just use my No 7 Hydraluminous foundation, or whatever foundation I'm using with spf but where it's been so hot I decided to use my ultrasun face in place of foundation for walks.

Moisturiser with spf makes me burn but I'm ok with foundation with spf.

That's weird isn't it, it should work regardless if it's a high SPF. Foundation with SPF is brilliant and it doesn't make my eyes swell up like sun cream.

It’s the best all day stuff IMO. However too frequent and it still triggers my hand eczema. I use it on kids and I use it if don’t want to cart a bottle around. But best for sensitive skin and good protection is la Roche posay IMO. Sadly not all day protection though

Altruist SPF50 is great and a lovely texture. I wear their face fluid every day, and the spray sunscreen on my body.

Ultimately though with very fair children you want them in rash vests or all in one suits. My infant daughter wears a neck to ankle sunsuit & a keppi/legionnaire’s hat. Clothing is far more effective than sunscreen.

Fair skinned blonde. I’ve switched to Altruist 50 (5star UVA) this year as Ultrasun has gone through the roof. Altruist is much more affordable, widely available and does just as good a job IME, without causing skin reactions.

It will leave a white cast but I’m a fair complexioned Caucasian, so that doesn’t bother me personally and I find it settles in after 10 mins or so.

This is exactly what I/we do. My daughter burns so easily and spent 13 hours queuing for Harry Styles at Wembley last week and she didn’t even have a bit of pink after using the spray.

The Altruist face fluid is also brill. I use Tret and most things break me out. My skin has never been better since using the face stuff.

GreyRooted · 23/06/2023 14:26

Meant to add, my daughter has eczema and the Altruist doesn’t irritate it at all.

I use the face fluid as my daytime moisturiser and then their non spf moisturiser at night. I think their products are brilliant!

Love it and used Ultrasun for ages.

My (crazy & scientific) friend did lots of research on sun protection and an experiment herself by putting different products on her back skin (grid) to compare the results after sun exposure.

She highly recommends Ultrasun, and the better one is physical protection (cover the skin)

Thank you - I was just about to do a search to find this having read it recently. As I recall, one year Tropical (home bargains) one came out v highly rated too.

Apricotton · 23/06/2023 14:54

I used Ultrasun about ten years ago when I visited a very hot country in Africa. I’m very very pale skinned. I swear I returned home even lighter than when I started (never tan, my options are white or red).

madeinmanc · 23/06/2023 15:12

Which ultrasun exactly is recommended? I sometimes see it but there's so many types.

Xrays · 23/06/2023 15:17

I have lupus and all of us lupus people on the forum I’m on use Alturist, lupus is triggered by the sun and we can actually get certain sun protection products on prescription but almost everyone in the group prefers to buy Altruist as it’s so much better and helps prevent prickly heat too.

Florencenotflo · 23/06/2023 15:24

I've never tried Ultrasun, but I like the Soltan ones from Boots. I buy the factor 50+ 8 hour one for the kids (although I re-apply it much more frequently than 8 hours). It's quite thick and takes a minute to soak in, but it does the job.

I tend to use the kids suncream as well, but have bought a garnish facial 50+ SPF this year. It's much lighter than normal suncream and will need reapplying during the day, but it doesn't leave me all greasy and looks fine with make up over the top.

AuntieStella · 23/06/2023 15:26

Which? review sunscreens fairly frequently. I'll see if I can dig out which they say are best in the most recent review.

One thing that stuck in my mind from one a few years ago is that some branded ones actually failed their test. And ASDA own brand outperformed its description (the protection it gave was higher than the level it was labelled with)

AuntieStella · 23/06/2023 15:28

Oh gosh - sorry, didn't refresh page after being away from keyboard.

Looks like ASDA has beaten the rest again this year - this is not fluke, it's happened several times now

Precipice · 23/06/2023 15:41

I recently switched (mostly) to P20 50spf (face and body ones) from Nivea shine control spf50 for face and Ambre Solaire spf50 spray. I find the face one better than the Nivea because the Nivea stung my eyes a little.

I had good results with it recently in Israel (with UV ratings of 11 and 12, couldn't have gone higher). I did reapply sunscreen during the day, mostly with the Ambre Solaire I still had, so with about 2-3 applications overall per day. I only really got a very slight tan in the middle of my feet between sandal straps. Maaaybe a new light sunspot or two somewhere.

fuckweasel · 23/06/2023 16:56

I have sun allergic skin and am very pale. Never tried Ultrasun but Piz Buin 50 sun allergy is brilliant.

Ceraunophile · 23/06/2023 17:33

Having used both and always rating ultra sun I prefer altruist now. Ds gets less prickly heat and eczema using it and it seems to absorb better. Don’t get the aerosol one though, I got one for quick top ups out and but the spray doesn’t seem to work properly

bigTillyMint · 23/06/2023 17:37

Get them full length rashies and hats - only need to apply suncream to faces!

Worked for my friends 3 ginger boys, and my two blondes when they were small!

DarkDarkNight · 23/06/2023 17:39

I really love Ultrasun and trust it implicitly with my very pale child, but texture wise it’s not great. It remains tacky on the skin and never really sinks in. My son doesn’t tolerate it well so I use a different sun cream and apply it more often to make up for the fact I don’t quite trust it.

Precipice · 23/06/2023 17:41

NotAMug · 23/06/2023 13:50

I never use sun cream on my face, I am allergic to almost all of them. I buy a decent moisturiser or tinted moisturiser that has an SPF in, often use a foundation that has SPF in also. My face still tans but it's really protected.

If your face still tans with it, how is it really protected? It might be getting less sun damage than if you weren't using anything at all, but it's still getting some, or you wouldn't be getting the tan.

KnittedCardi · 23/06/2023 17:42

I think it must really vary by skin. We always used Ambre Solaire, as one if the few which didn't give us allergies, and sinks in nicely. Light and creamy. Tried Ultrasun a couple of years ago and now a convert. Again, brilliant for sun sensitive skin, no allergic reactions, and no burning. We holiday in with Sardinia, so very high UV. We use 30, and reapply, but don't spend all day in the sun.

SybilWrites · 23/06/2023 17:43

I've not heard of altruist before, but ultrasun is the only one I've found that doesn't give my eczema prone, sensitive skinned dd an itchy rash.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 23/06/2023 17:48

I'm pale and sun-sensitive and love Ultrasun. Use it on all my exposed bits because otherwise I'd burn waiting 5 minutes at the bus stop on my commute.

I don't do beach holidays though (due to being sensitive to the sun!). I would reapply if I was in and out of the water.

I like the fact that it isn't all greasy, and doesn't smell.

tacomaco · 23/06/2023 17:51

Scottish, red headed family here and we use ultra sun. Good stuff.

we usually buy from QVC when there is a TSV on.

DarkDarkNight · 23/06/2023 17:51

Aerosol spf is crap due to full of propellants - you think you're applying a lot and you're not . I'd avoid

I use aerosol SPFs quite a bit as my son complains less about them than thick lotions and creams. I shake them, spray onto my hand and apply as normal. You can make sure you’re putting the right amount on then.
