Victim Surcharge

There is a case local to me where someone committed a crime against a wild animal. They have today been sentenced and got prison time as well as having to pay a victim surcharge.

I always assumed this went to the victim but I'm assuming now it doesn't as the victim couldn't possibly have any use for the money. So I'm curious, where does victim surcharge money go?

It doesn't go towards an individual victim but does go to fund victim services in general. If a compensation order was made to a particular victim then they would receive that money through the court system, although at the rate that the defendant pays it which may take a while.
