Paying £300 for a ticket to a festival doesn't make you cool... or does it?

I'm so fed up of DBIL and DSis going on about Glastonbury and acting like they're the edgiest, coolest people on the planet because they're going this weekend. They're talking about it like they literally going to hanging out with the the Arctic Monkeys and will be having a transcendence experience in the Green Field with Elton John. Also if I hear Dsis utter the word 'Glasto' one more time I may rip my own ears off. She told me this morning she doesn't think I would be able to handle it (even though I have been in previous years) but I can't help but think 'handle what?' she's off to Glastonbury not to a war zone.

I do get that it's really exciting and it's brilliant and I don't even mind listening to them talking about being excited it's more the smuggery that's going along with it. I'm probably a bit jealous and bitter but honestly it's so bloody boring and annoying.

I'm not really hearing smugness from what you've said, just excitement.

What is it that they don't think you can handle? How long ago did you go?

Igneococcus · 21/06/2023 14:41

I thought Arctic Monkeys pulled out?

CrapBucket · 21/06/2023 14:42

I’ve never been but it seems like a middle age middle class thing these days. Not that I’m knocking that but I’d hardly call it edgy

Glastonbury isn't edgy or anything like that nowadays. It's a great festival of course but it is huge. I personally can't cope with doing 5 days at a festival anymore but has a good decade doing Glastonbury.

The cost of Glastonbury is massive so let them be (annoyingly) excited.

HappiDaze · 21/06/2023 14:44

I've been a few times and loved it

If someone gave me a ticket I'd definitely go again

Blackbyrd · 21/06/2023 14:45

Glastonbury has zero credibility now, it's all about the money. Especially sad are those who continue sporting their wristbands for months after the event. Festivals that are far better value and more exciting are available..

Bluevelvetsofa · 21/06/2023 14:47

One million single use tents left behind apparently. Don’t know how that can be justified.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/06/2023 14:48

Going to a music festival is a pretty normal, safe thing to do. Its hardly climbing Everest. Teenagers and retired people both manage it independently.

KylieKangaroo · 21/06/2023 14:50

@Bluevelvetsofa my thoughts exactly. I always took my tent home with me, no chance I'm paying for another one!

Drews · 21/06/2023 14:52

It hasn't been edgy since the fence went up in 2001. It's just a slog and bloody hard work now and not as much fun anymore.

Not yet, they cancelled a show this week because Alex T has laryngitis

That's 5 tents per attendee. Seems unlikely.

MadamWhiteleigh · 21/06/2023 14:54

It’s a bit middle-aged and middle-class nowadays to go to Glastonbury isn’t it?

The average age is 39 and there are the same number in the 41-50 age bracket as the 18-25 age bracket (18%)

Tipintorecession · 21/06/2023 14:58

Id be annoyed at the use of 'Glasto' too tbh

Igneococcus · 21/06/2023 15:02

Ah, thanks @grimmers44 I misread the headline that flashed up on my phone.

SquashPenguin · 21/06/2023 15:05

Nothing edgy about Glastonbury. It always looks shit to be honest!

Oh really? 😄

pinesoutsidemywindow · 21/06/2023 15:13

I probably am a bit jealous, I love Dsis very much but she a lot younger than me and is always trying to 'educate' me in things she considers edgy and cool - i.e. Glastonbury, things happening in London (even though I live her and she doesn't), bands (which TBF she definitely knows more than I do these days) clothes etc.

To whoever asked before I last went about 10 years ago (and was probably as annoying to everyone I spoke to too :)

Haha I was going to mention people who wear their wrist bands for months afterwards, but someone beat me too it.

Rip your own ears off Op, its the only sensible thing to do.

Appleblossompetal · 21/06/2023 15:16

I wouldn’t be able to handle it, in the sense that going four days without showers and being in an environment full of a massive city of tents
just doesn’t appeal. I like smaller festivals, though. I do think Glastonbury is cool though and it’s probably one of those things where you don’t get what you’re missing if you haven’t done it.

EyelessArseFace · 21/06/2023 15:18

There are few things I would enjoy less than Glastonbury, and I absolutely cannot see the attraction in being in a giant field of mud with a quarter of a million other people (and the associated toilet facilities), while having my ears bombarded with sound and my body bombarded with either blistering heat or torrential rain.

No thanks!

RattyHealy · 21/06/2023 15:23

I do really enjoy the reflections on Glastonbury from people who haven't been. It's my favourite time of year. 😂

User195376587 · 21/06/2023 15:23

It's quite cheap really, it can cost £100-£200 just to see one band. DS goes every year and always uses the same tent.

User195376587 · 21/06/2023 15:27

I don't know why people bang on about the price, 5 days camping will probably set you back £100 and that is with no entertainment. DS treats it as a holiday as he is there from Wednesday to Monday
