Films that still scare you

What are the films that still give you the absolute heebies, to the point that actually affect your life in some way?

For me:

American Werewolf in London - you will not catch me walking alone at night in quiet locations
Evil Dead: I flat-out refused to get a cabin in a remote location for a break with DH
The Conjuring: Every time I put sheets on the line I feel my heart start to race thinking of that one scene.....
Terminator 2 - the nuclear bomb scene. We have a similar view of London from our local playground and I have to not look otherwise I imagine it hitting and get upset.

I dont even like hearing 'Thriller' - I hate zombies. I feel mildly better about films like 28 days later, knowing that in reality as soon as the ankle tendons have rotted, they wont be able to run after you anymore......

I’d never heard of the film Paperhouse before now - the book Marianne Dreams scared me to death when I read it aged about ten or eleven!

I’m a die-hard horror movie fan, and the scariest films for me are mainly the Found Footage ones, such as the four Paranormal Activity films. There is something terrifying about the thought of an unseen entity dragging you off your bed!!

They based that on a British TV show that was popular in the 70s.

I watched it and it was indeed creepy. The show (Escape into Night) was based on the novel Marianne Dreams.

The Thing by David Lynch. I first watched it as a teenager and watched it again more recently and it still gave me nightmares.

Do you mean John Carpenter’s 1982 film? That’s the one I was going to mention. I had to force myself to sit through it (poor dogs!). Real nightmare material.

When I was a young teenager The Creeping Flesh scared the bejesus out of me. Just one scene, but damn it stuck.

I've never seen it, but I loved the book it was based on (Marianne Dreams), as a child.

Nightmare on Elm Street for me. Sounds stupid, but I had nightmares about it before I'd even watched it and have avoided all but the briefest scenes since...probably wouldn't find it scary now.

Oh my goodness! This is what I was going to say - just horrific. I watched it in the 90s (before Internet) by accident. Just switched over 10 minutes in and started watching. I didn't even realise it WAS a horror. Its never left me... 😳

Also, Apaches. A public information film from 1977. Aimed at KIDS. Utterly horrifying... I can't rewatch it after 46 years!

Mention of Apaches (which I haven’t seen) just reminded me of an utterly terrifying and depressing film I saw at class about 1981 - The War Game, made in 1966 I think. Made like a documentary of a nuclear strike on England, it was horrifying.

I loved it and at the same time... It's just... Wow

@TinyTear the ending though?! Like I’m so angry at the film but it was so gripping😂 I don’t ever want to watch it again but I thought it was great.

I’d never heard of it before so thanks for commenting it on this thread!

Apache's was awful, I grew up on a farm and me and my brother did all those things.
Also Dark Water, that one is awful.
I'm 54 and those have stayed with me.

Watership Down is another, I would NEVER watch that again.

Yirk · 24/06/2023 07:51

The first Halloween film...

clpsmum · 24/06/2023 08:07

Hostel, silly games and cherry tree lane

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/06/2023 21:09

YY to Eden Lake. Far far more terrifying than any (ghost story based film)
