Films that still scare you

What are the films that still give you the absolute heebies, to the point that actually affect your life in some way?

For me:

American Werewolf in London - you will not catch me walking alone at night in quiet locations
Evil Dead: I flat-out refused to get a cabin in a remote location for a break with DH
The Conjuring: Every time I put sheets on the line I feel my heart start to race thinking of that one scene.....
Terminator 2 - the nuclear bomb scene. We have a similar view of London from our local playground and I have to not look otherwise I imagine it hitting and get upset.

I dont even like hearing 'Thriller' - I hate zombies. I feel mildly better about films like 28 days later, knowing that in reality as soon as the ankle tendons have rotted, they wont be able to run after you anymore......

Candyman - I struggled to look in a mirror for a very long time after that (talking about the original one - no desire to see the new one!)

Wait until Dark with Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin. I have seen it loads of times and it still makes me jump. When it was released, cinemas had to get special permission to turn out all the house lights (except the emergency exits) as it just adds to the atmosphere!

Watership down

I mean wtaf that is not a kids film. General woundwort is terrifying and 'there's a dog in the woods' haunts me.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 21/06/2023 15:52

Threads! (Don't watch it OP it's worse than the Terminator 2 scene). I still watch it every so often just to feed my morbid tendencies.

sandgrown · 21/06/2023 15:55

The Exorcist and The People who live under the stairs . Not keen on The Wicker Man . I thought Event Horizon was rubbish .

OlderandwiserMaybe · 21/06/2023 15:57

When I was 11 my friends brother thought it would be hilarious to get an uncensored copy of Exorcist for us to watch as part of a birthday sleepover.
I couldn't sleep properly for weeks after. I've hated horror movies ever since.

Sadless · 21/06/2023 15:57

The recent one on Netflix called the fall. Could watch it.

I can't honestly say I've ever been scared by a film because I like horror, gore, creepiness etc. but I did find Pet Semetary very depressing and sad and I don't bother watching it anymore since I had children.

robinsnest1967 · 21/06/2023 16:04

The Thing by David Lynch. I first watched it as a teenager and watched it again more recently and it still gave me nightmares.

The vanishing. The original. Utterly believable and just awful. stayed with me for years. se7en was gratuitous and dreadful.

Mintakan · 21/06/2023 16:16

Horror movies and gore don’t scare me, it’s the ones with sustained tension or where you can’t see the danger like A Quiet Place, Blair Witch Project or Signs.

Diddykong · 21/06/2023 16:16

Of course The Ring. I've never been able to bring myself to watch the proper Japanese version.

BinnityBoo · 21/06/2023 16:17

Sixth Sense. The bit with the kid throwing up in the tent, if I remember it correctly, I haven't watched it in over 10 years because it traumatised me the first time 😂

maddiemookins16mum · 21/06/2023 16:18

Silence of the Lambs still scares me and I must have watched it dozens of times in the last 30 years.

You are the second person to mention Event Horizon - I am going to watch it this evening!

Good luck watching that. I vowed I would never watch EH again. I found it is the sort of film that stayed with me, and not for the right reasons.

CathyorClaire · 21/06/2023 16:24

Candyman still gives me the creeps.

Wolf Creek remains one of the most terrifying films I have seen.

CathyorClaire · 21/06/2023 16:29

Oh and also the original When A Stranger Calls and the original Susperia. I'm still wary about looking through a window at night forty odd years on 🙄

Came on to .say threads I watched it in the 80,s and it scared the shit out of me for years .

NoodleQueen90 · 21/06/2023 16:31

The ring 😭
As a teenager I accidentally died my hair jet black instead of a nice brunette...thought it would be hilarious to put on a white dressing gown and crawl towards my friends at a sleepover Samara style with my black hair hanging down...we all ended up scared silly, even me 😂

SchruteShunned · 21/06/2023 16:31

@BrianBettyGrable that film is from a book called Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr. I read it when I was a child and the rocks she drew around the house watching the boy completely freaked me out!

GeriatricMumma · 21/06/2023 16:33

Alive

SouthCountryGirl · 21/06/2023 16:34

The Conjuring. I also can't listen to Call Me - Blondie because all I think about is The Conjuring.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I've never watched the whole thing.

RocketIceLollie · 21/06/2023 16:34

The first Jaws film.
