Films that still scare you

What are the films that still give you the absolute heebies, to the point that actually affect your life in some way?

For me:

American Werewolf in London - you will not catch me walking alone at night in quiet locations
Evil Dead: I flat-out refused to get a cabin in a remote location for a break with DH
The Conjuring: Every time I put sheets on the line I feel my heart start to race thinking of that one scene.....
Terminator 2 - the nuclear bomb scene. We have a similar view of London from our local playground and I have to not look otherwise I imagine it hitting and get upset.

I dont even like hearing 'Thriller' - I hate zombies. I feel mildly better about films like 28 days later, knowing that in reality as soon as the ankle tendons have rotted, they wont be able to run after you anymore......

Oh my goodness! This is what I was going to say - just horrific. I watched it in the 90s (before Internet) by accident. Just switched over 10 minutes in and started watching. I didn't even realise it WAS a horror. Its never left me... 😳

Also, Apaches. A public information film from 1977. Aimed at KIDS. Utterly horrifying... I can't rewatch it after 46 years!

YY to the public information films.
Oh and not a film but Spooks where (I don’t even know the characters name) I think she was played my Lisa Faulkner if my memory is serving me rightly) got her head put in a fryer.

Hitchcock's The Birds. Always been scared of them since.

Not necessarily the actual films as they were a bit awful but the concept of Final Destination.

everythingisfigureoutabble · 21/06/2023 19:40

Not a film but the Jeffery Dahmer series on Netflix really got to me.

Also the episode in The walking dead where the zombies are in the walls!

Films - creep and the hills have eyes were ones that really got to me. I used to love horror films when younger but haven't watched as many recently as they scare me a lot now since having kids.

Theskyoutsideisblue · 21/06/2023 19:43

Jaws. Shark obviously plastic but that music

The Sun scene.

Jadeypie · 21/06/2023 19:55

The others
scared the shit out of me when I was younger I had to turn it off I've watched it since as an adult and it's not so bad still creepy tho haha

There was a thread on here years ago of people's favourite horror movies and I bought several to try.

They included Wolf Creek, Babel, The Conjuring, The Ring, Event Horizon, Hills have eyes. I watched them all. Couldn't watch them now.

For me these days though, the films I definitely can't watch again are films like Sleepers....true stories of real life horrific abuse of children.

Chained was one of the worst films I have ever, ever seen.

Also Cherry Tree Lane. Home invasion stuff that you can totally see happening.

Emmamoo89 · 21/06/2023 20:17

The midnight meat train!

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/06/2023 20:17

I Am Legend. I know I'm a dick.

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/06/2023 20:18

Oh yes and Arachnophobia

Emmamoo89 · 21/06/2023 20:18

Creep also

CathyorClaire · 21/06/2023 21:03

Those creepy twins taking in unison.

Oh, yeah. Dh and I still ask each other 'do you want to play for ever and ever?' when we walk down a particularly atmospheric hotel corridor 💀

DD told us she sat through The Shining on a German exchange visit. She was terrified but too polite to say she wanted out...

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 21/06/2023 21:10

The theme music from The Terminator still gives me existential dread.
The Ring terrifies me, how the ghost girl has moved 5ft in a blink.
The Grudge. I have a cupboard in my bedroom built into the wall and I sometimes imagine it opening at night and that bright white face is staring at me 😣

Keekabooyou · 21/06/2023 21:16

Nightmare on elm street as a child, can’t believe I was allowed to watch it!
The Mist and wolf creek as an adult curl my toes thinking about them.

BasiliskStare · 21/06/2023 21:24

Threads ( watched contemporaneously ) and the original The Haunting

Yes, Lisa was one of the main characters, which made it even more shocking. I actually wrote and complained to ofcom or the BBC about it.

AtomicWambsgans · 22/06/2023 04:27

The Japanese film called The Audition is the only film that truly frightens me. Even the music is terrifying. I'm someone who enjoys watching horrors alone in the dark as well.

ringsaglitter · 22/06/2023 04:44

@AtomicWambsgans

I didn't know anyone else would have seen that! It's so humourous at times too then...........yeah

Kate3150 · 22/06/2023 05:29

I notice Event Horizon keeps being mentioned. I’ve never heard of it and I’m too scared to Google 😂😂

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 22/06/2023 10:27

I didn’t find Event Horizon particularly scary 😬

YY to public information films and anything like 10 Rillington Place. My nana grew up around the corner but after she was born the murders happened, years after. She’d ghoulishly tell us about them but I didn’t know much. After the film and tv series (and with most serial killer films) it made me look at certain people in a certain way. You just cannot tell a murdering psychopath by liking at them.

I didn’t like eg Nightmare on Elm Street etc but they were more rites of passage films for us as teenagers, you had to watch, be scared or not then discuss.

ElsaMars · 22/06/2023 10:38

Definitely Event Horizon for me too, really disturbed me. And for someone who likes horror and a scare, Hostel which was just really, really horrible and upsetting. I really struggled with how a filmmaker could even create it.

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 22/06/2023 10:44

Yeah I can’t watch Hostel, Eden Lake really distressed me. The Austrian version of Funny Games did too, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
