Has anyone got or had the contraceptive implant

Did your bleeding change?

Ive had mine for a year and a half almost and I still have irregular bleeding. It’s very light so I can’t complain but because it’s so irregular I’m starting to worry it could be something else (cervical cancer springs to mind).

I had one previously and it was the same.

Has anyone else had this for longer than the few months that they tell you is normal?

When I had mine it was irregular and light just like your description. Them after 2 years it was heavy and 3 weeks out of 4. I had to pay to get it removed as the NHS wouldn't do it.

FragrantBumFluff · 20/06/2023 18:05

That's shocking that they wouldn't Shock

It doesn't really have an impact on me the moment but I have started to worry a bit that it's not normal, all the googling I've done tells me it should settle down after the first few months. So it is reassuring that it's not just me.

I had irregular bleeding and constant spotting the whole year I had mine in. It's "normal".

I've had constant bleeding with mine that has now settled into 3 weeks bleed out of 4. Been on it probably 18 months. Fun times!

jollybynamejollybynature · 20/06/2023 18:19

Wasn't on it long (talking a few months) started a period and just didn't stop, that was 9weeks worth of constant bleeding.
Couldn't give me anything to stop it due to a previous dvt.

Got it taken out, no questions asked.

PimpMyFridge · 20/06/2023 18:22

Yes, had this. Basically had one loooong period for 3 months and had it taken out. 👀

chickenwings2 · 20/06/2023 18:28

I've had it twice and constant bleeding. Took it out first time after 2 years as it never calmed down despite drs saying it would. Tried second time and again constant bleeding so had to fight to get it out. Currently contraceptive free as everything seems to make me bleed

FragrantBumFluff · 20/06/2023 22:14

Normal then!

Ive had mine for over a year and ive been on my period every day since ive had it. Go wont take it out and im now on the implant aswel as the pill to stop bleeding.

LadyJ2023 · 20/06/2023 22:38

Mine was removed after 6 weeks bleeding started and never stopped

Loub55 · 20/06/2023 22:50

My experience differs from others here, I had one horrible period that lasted weeks. Then since then I haven't had a single bleed (1.5 yrs).

My DSis however has really irregular, heavy periods with it.

Jayney2 · 20/06/2023 22:53

I haven't had a single period or any bleeding for 3 years on the implant!

Blossomandbee · 20/06/2023 22:56

I had it for a year and didn't have any bleeding at all. It was odd as the mini pill made me bleed constantly and apparently it's similar hormones

ItsNotRocketSalad · 20/06/2023 22:57

Pretty much anything is normal because it affects us all so differently! I had no periods at all when I had mine. I'm sometimes tempted to get another one just for that...

Ozgirl75 · 20/06/2023 22:58

I’m on my third and I’ve had 10 years and no period that whole time. I love my Implanon!

Emmamoo89 · 20/06/2023 22:58

I hated it. Bled for 2 weeks. And had awful cramps x

Emmamoo89 · 20/06/2023 22:59

Each month*

jackstini · 20/06/2023 23:00

I am on my 4th implant (3 years each) and it's been great for me
No bleeding in first/second year of each one and then occasional spotting in the last year or so of each implant

FinallyHere · 20/06/2023 23:13

I had an implant from 1992 for fifteen years. Very light spotting in the first three months and no bleeding thereafter. Had it replaced until I was over 52, by which time it was assumed I no longer needed contraception.

Sheer genius.

SirenSays · 20/06/2023 23:16

I sometimes have bleeding that won't stop without taking the pill for a couple of days. The rest of the time no periods at all. Its bliss

This is my plan too. Can I ask - when you came off it, did you have menopause symptoms? My Dr mentioned ages ago that I could segue straight into HRT from the Implanon if I wanted but I wondered how the body goes having the hormones suddenly removed? Wondering if it’s worse than easing into the menopause.

Workingallthetime · 28/08/2025 06:25

Did anyone experience weight gain on it?

FinallyHere · 30/08/2025 23:00

@Ozgirl75apologies for the delay in posting. In the same way as I had no periods all the time I had the implant, I had no noticeable symptoms when I came off it. Nowt nothing.

it was a bit awkward because all around me people discussed the challenges and I’ve experienced nothing. Skin clear, hair still thick, brain no more or less fuzzy.

Body hair was always think, no longer need underarm or leg wax, oh but I did have my eyebrows microbladed as they were getting almost unnoticeable.

about ten years in I changed my eating habits as I was bored of being overweight and lethargic. Just don’t eat sugar or starchy carbs any
ore and the pounds dropped off me, I have loads of energy and feel better than I ever have.

Hope you have an equally easy time

FinallyHere · 30/08/2025 23:01

@Workingallthetime I certainly gained weight in the time I used the implant but then I changed by eating habits over that time too, so not really unexplained weight gain. When I stopped eating the rubbish the weight fell off me again so I won’t really blame the implant.
