Why are other countries so obsessed about what time people put the kids to bed in the UK??

Just that really......

They aren't. At all. It never crosses the mind of an American, or Frenchman, or Scandinavian what time someone else in another country puts their kids to bed.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 20/06/2023 10:57

I don't know that they are it is just that if mentioned in some places it is seen as quite early or not flexible but circumstances in other countries maybe different, in Southern Europe children often have siesta style naps until much older than UK because of heat people rest in afternoon and eat later at night, especially in holidays, it maybe that other countires don't have same bedtime routine so it's more like child is tired PJ's on go to sleep as showers are in the morning rather than baths at night etc

Flatandhappy · 20/06/2023 10:58

They really aren’t. Most people in the world don’t give a flying fig about how British people choose to spend their lives. Are you worrying about parental styles in Dakar or Singapore? Probably not.

I beg to differ there is another thread on here that only got started yesterday about how weird parents in the UK are for putting the kids to bed early.

I saw that thread and didn’t look as I suspected it would irritate me! It’s interesting that some people can’t get their head around different cultures living differently!

I don’t think MN is representative of the world in general. Bloody hope not anyway.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 20/06/2023 11:09

I'm British and I don't understand the obsession with early bedtimes in this country.

I don't think people in other countries give it a second thought. It is hardly surprising that people from other countries who are bringing up their kids in this country might express surprise or confusion at a practice which they find unusual. There is no need to take it as a personal attack.

BMW6 · 20/06/2023 11:10

I did wonder if it is the same poster under another name who was critical of the UK having a culture of leaving over 10 year olds alone for hours......

So many UK bashing threads........

Yeah this does seem to be quite a lot lately

I wouldn't worry about it. There is just as much bashing of other cultures as well!

Lottie2shoes · 20/06/2023 11:15

I do not think it is that even. I think when you write something on mumsnet or any other SM for that matter, you are invoking a response. So someone will take a couple of minutes/ seconds to think and will be like ' ah, that is not something I do or the way I do it'.
I do not think people on a daily basis even think or wonder what others in other country do, well I have never anyway.

And from that you extrapolate that other countries are “obsessed” with U.K. bedtimes?

So let me get this right when someone ask a question outside the UK it ok okay because they're surprised and confused but when I ask a question it only becomes I feel personally attacked?🤯🤯. Sounds like double standards to me.

Indeed

I am not one to report, usually, but I report each and every one of those.

Chickpea17 · 20/06/2023 12:21

Bccoach

There has been so many threads about why people in the UK put the kids to bed early. If you do a search Mumsnet you will find quite a lot to say the least. I used the word obsession but you can use what word you like.

To be fair there's also threads where British people can't understand that other countries do things differently

Agreed but kids bedtime in the UK seems to be a particular conversation that keeps coming up.

Different countries, different lifestyles.

BTW kids in early years education and of primary age are in bed early because lots of households consist of only one/two full-time working adults where the kids routines are based around the adults working.
