Ex still asks about me 8 years on

Me and my ex broke up 8 years ago. His choice.

Found out he went up to my current boyfriend of 5 years at a social event the other day and asked about me, how I am, that he is happy for me and asked if we were still together.
Luckily my current partner is very aware of the situation and just told him the truth. Why does my ex still do this? He does it every single year at the same event and it grinds my gears a bit.

You mean he's literally just asking after you? Maybe he's a human being who spent time in a relationship with someone and is genuinely interested to hear how they're doing? Why are you making such a big deal about it? Even exes I had acrimonious splits with, I'd enquire about if I met a sibling/mutual friend. It's nothing more than enquiring that they're well, how they're doing etc.

I ask the kids how their dad is. I ask how he is myself if we speak (rarely). I also ask after his new (15 years) partner, and his mom and dad.

does that make me odd?

So he sees you once a year at this annual event and asks how you are?
Really not a big deal! It's conversation that's all.

If it's just this, he's being normal & sounds decent.
